This story is set up to be able to jump around in time & space and across universes ... and the dead can jump back and forth between being a ghost, and being alive in their own time period/s. There's a window or two, (or more), out there that allows that. 
Just allow for those who want to do it differently, or not be able to do it at all. (Your way is not the only way.) So the window/s will need to be not so easy to find or get through. They'll need special circumstances in order to find them and use them to get back and forth.
Humans & creatures can use these windows just as well as the ghosts ... if they can find them.
