Not yet, Katina. The films are shown every other Wednesday; Notorious is tomorrow night. I'll report in, and let you know how I liked it. From Siren's description, I can't wait to see it.
Oh, which reminds me - something for the useless information thread....
And I'm off.

Look forward to reading your views. Hope you have a great evening whatever you think of the film, which I'm sure you'll enjoy anyway.

Urgh, Katina. My friend called last night to call off the movie tonight - it seems he's got a church function coming up, and he's on the planning committee. The nerve. We are having coffee this morning where I can chastise him in person.

The nerve indeed Lady P, fancy standing you up like that, hope you gave him a piece of your mind. When's the next opportunity; and hey, if he pulls that stunt again you let me know and I'll hop on a flight and escort you myself.

Booking that flight for you now, Katina.....whether he bails on me next time or not. I'd think it'd be fun to watch a movie with you. I'll buy the popcorn - cuz I'm certainly not popping it myself. Unless you like the taste of burnt.
My friend says he thinks I can dig up a copy of Notorious from another of his friends. We have a viewing date set up for next week. I'm making the popcorn - just to get back at him.

It's a date then Lady P, sure it will be great fun; is it formal, will I need a tux? I'll keep an eye open for the ticket, just hope it arrives quicker then that crate of snow you were sending some time back, I think they're getting tired of me inquiring about it at the post office every week, pretty sure they suspect I'm a bit strange.

Let me know if you need a copy of "Notorious", Gams. I have it. *wriggling* Ooooo, what a good movie!

Informal, of course, Katina....I don't want to have to shave my legs. But if you do - by all means, go ahead.
The ticket is wrapped up tight in water-proof packaging, and is included in the crate of snow.
I'm sending a ticket to Siren too; cuz we all gotta watch together. Hers will be included in the package with "The Vines Have Tender Grapes".
Siren - I received it yesterday. Mind if I keep it for another week? I want to save it for next week's "Coffee and a Movie". Today's viewing is already set. He found a copy of "Notorious".

Keep it as long as you like, Gams. And be sure and let us know what you think about "Notorious". Woohoo! I wish I was there to watch it with you!

"Notorious" was great; I loved it. My friend made barbecue chicken pizza; I loved that too.
I didn't notice Alfred's cameo appearance or hear a toilet flushing which is supposed to be in all his movies. I was looking and listening, but maybe this one was made before he felt it necessary.
Ingrid is beautiful. I've never seen all the way through a film with her in it. I kept thinking how much her face reminded me of a girl I went to high-school with who was from somewhere in Scandinavia. Ingrid is Swedish, isn't she?
Madame Sebastian.....ooooo, what a perfect detestably wicked mother-in-law! <shudder>
And Claude Rains.....didn't he always play that type of character - evil with a hint of gullibility? Gullible with a hint of evilness? Maybe he just looks the part.
The suspense was great; I didn't even notice how much pizza I was eating while glued to the television.
The only thing I didn't think plausible was how instantly and deeply Ingrid and Cary fell in love. But that's what the whole movie was hinged upon, and after-all it is the movies.
Best line: There's nothing like a love song to give you a good laugh.

Gams, I am so glad you liked "Notorious", and so relieved! It's always a risk, recommending a film to a friend.
***There are spoilers in this post, if you've never seen "Notorious".
To me, Ingrid is even more beautiful in "Casablanca", and in "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde". But yes, she is beautiful in "Notorious". She and Cary make such a handsome pair. Wonderful chemistry. Yes, she was Swedish, born in Stockholm.
IMO, Sebastian isn't gullible. He's just fooling himself. He knows how risky it is, trusting Alicia. And his mother never lets him forget it, either. But most people have been a fool for love (or lust) at some point.
BTW, did you notice how mom smoked her cigarette? She looked like a gangster! That shows you that her surrounding weren't always so high-class.
My favorite moment is when Alicia figures out how much trouble she's in - the teacup scene. The series of shots - her face, making the realization, to her looking over at Sebastian and his mom, and her trying to rise and walk away without panicking - are just fabulous. Then the great scene when she collapses in the foyer, and Sebastian and mom say they'll take care of her. She's too weak to get away. Though she cries out and tries to struggle, it's too late. Man!!
And, of course, the rescue scene at the end is so romantic and suspenseful. It still gets me, though I know exactly what's going to happen. It's terrific, watching the look on Cary's face as he finds her there. His tough shell finally cracks. And then, there's that sexy shot, when he lays his head on the pillow, next to hers. It's like they're in bed together - very sexy stuff for the 1940s! And then, when he's carrying her down the stairs, it's so nerve-wracking. As a kid, I remember literally saying, "Hurry! Hurry!" to the tv screen. They say that Hitchcock actually added steps to Cary's descent, so that the tension would build even higher.
The ending is pure fantasy. Devlin leaves behind a prime Nazi witness - a guy who'd surely spill his guts, since he needs protection from the other Nazis - just because Sebastian slept with his girl? Coooold!
*sigh* Gosh, what a good movie. I'm going to watch it again, soon!

Awwwww, kat - one of our favorites is on TCM tonight: "Starman". It's the letterbox version, which I've never seen. Starman just left Jenny asleep in the mobile home, and caught a ride with the night cook at the truckstop. Remember his first experience, smoking a cigarette? The cook says, "You're not from around here, are you?" Lol!
I've never had Dutch apple pie, and not thought of this movie.
What a sweet, sweet movie!

I'd love to see it again, too.
Sebastian's gullibility - I didn't mean exactly with Alicia....maybe a little. But more with his colleagues I think. How'd he get involved? He's certainly not a big-time player - he really has no say, it seems, in whatever plan they're hatching. He's just providing the house, and the wine cellar. And the cigarette smoking gangsta momma.
Our plans to watch "Our Vines Have Tender Grapes" fell through this week, (one day I will actually get the title of the movie correct). The day we planned our Coffee and a Movie the girls had off school due to snow. The next day my friend bailed....headed to California, to visit his brother and warmer weather. Pfft. Wimp. He did leave me though, with a copy of North by Northwest, since this is the next movie that we were supposed to see at that old theater. Ah well....it looks like I've got enough to keep me out of the cold for a while.

Siren! I watched "Our Vines Have Tender Grapes"; previewed it as you suggested to see if the girls might get upset about the barn fire scene. I don't think so, and the movie was so sweet otherwise, I think they'd really enjoy it. I did!

Really good film Siren, I'd like to catch it again myself; it'll probably pop up again on Foxtel and I may just tape it, it's one of those movies you can watch multiple times without ever tiring of. And yeah, remember that scene alright, if only that cook knew just how correct he was. Many memorable scenes weren't there, the Apple Pie scene that you mention, the one where he accelerates through the red light, Jenny watching the home movie near the beginning, very moving scene that one, just a fine film all round.

My mom says it reminds her of her childhood, growing up on the farm. They don't make movies like that anymore. These days, there has to be a crisis of some kind, or potty humor, or kids who talk and think like adults. I'm glad you liked that sweet little story, like I did. And Margaret O'Brien was a little marvel.

Remember the scene at the end, when they stop at the diner near the crater's edge, and he has to settle for cherry cobbler? The disappointment on his face is so funny. And yes, the home movies scene is so poignant - the shifting expressions on her face are telling. The first time I saw Starman, it was not long after we had to put our cat to sleep. So, the scene where Starman brings the deer to life just made me sob. Beautiful scene. And the way he gestures for the deer to rise and flee moves me still. Jeff Bridges was Oscar-nominated for that movie. And it's definitely that great a performance - very deep and well thought-out. Agreed - a fine movie one can enjoy many times.

They're going to ship it out on Monday, so I should get it a day or two after that. It's the unrated version. I don't know what ending that will be, as I've read here there are two. I didn't read what the two versions were though, but I saved the posts to my favorites to read after viewing the movie.
I did like 'The Cave' (2005) though. It is listed as Sci-fi/Fantasy, whereas 'The Descent' (2006) is listed as horror. From what I've seen of the 'The Decent' so far, they both have a different feel to them. There were similarities though, but then there's only so many bogeymen type creatures you can come up with to fill deep, dark caverns. You'd pretty much expect them to have features that cave dwelling creatures have: sonar, etc. So they're bound to have a lot of comparisons.

No worries. As soon as I saw you and Siren were comparing endings I stopped reading and saved the threads to read after viewing the movie. I got the replacement DVD today, so if all goes well I'll finally see this movie. (And I too forget to add spoiler space sometimes when discussing a show.)

I watched the unrated version. At the end when the camera zoomed out to black, you could hear the sounds of the creatures all around her. However . . .
S * P * O * I * L * E * R * * * S * P * A * C * E
In the Special Features section, there is an interview with Writer/Director Neil Marshall, and he said that she _does_ make it out of the cave physically, but mentally she's still trapped down there. And it is Juno she sees sitting next to her in the truck.
He also said that he left it up to viewers to decide for themselves as to whether she made it out of the cave physically, but not mentally . . . or mentally, but not physically. Either way, she's totally insane. Or perhaps she's a ghost. Again, up to the viewer which it is.
I loved both movies. Each is different, yet similar.

Interesting; I thought about that alternative, that she actually escaped physically, but it seemed a little "contrived" to me, that suddenly the exit would be right there and she could escape so easily.
I prefer the other version, that she was still trapped and merely projected her way out in her mind. Guess whichever way you wish to imagine it it's still a very powerful ending.
Enjoyed both films as well, although "The Cave" seemed a lot more "by the numbers" and lacked the sense of dread that "The Descent" conveyed; it actually had the feel of a rather expensive made for television movie about it [ maybe it was ] but was enjoyable nonetheless.

In the special features of 'The Cave', the writers were disappointed that the director turned it into Sci-Fi, and gave it a PG-13 rating. Their script was a lot bloodier than what was portrayed on film. They said there is film of the bloodier scenes, which ended up on the cutting room floor, and they hope one day there will be an unrated DVD version for viewers to see.
