Fayetteville Soldier Killed In Helicopter Crash In Vietnam

FAYETTEVILLE — A Fayetteville family is mourning a father, a husband and a soldier.

Lieutenant Colonel Rennie Cory Jr. was one of 16 people killed when their helicopter crashed in the jungles of central Vietnam.

American and Vietnamese officials combed through the wreckage Monday. The helicopter team was looking for remains of U.S. soldiers missing since the Vietnam war.

Cory's widow, Andrea, says his last mission was a fitting one.

"I really believed in his sacrifice to his country. But it didn't come because he loved his country, it just came because that's the kind of person he was," she says.

Cory was 43. His wife, four children and father still live in Fayetteville. Six other Americans died in the helicopter crash.

U.S. peacekeeper in Kosovo dies of a gunshot wound

PRISTINA, Yugoslavia (AP) A U.S. peacekeeper has died of a gunshot wound at a U.S. military base in Kosovo, a U.S. official said Tuesday. The body of Pfc. Gary S. Kalinofski, 21, was discovered Monday by fellow soldiers at Camp Magrath, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of the province's capital, Pristina. The cause of Kalinofski's death remained unknown, but did not result from any engagement with hostile forces, said Major James Crews, a spokesman for the U.S peacekeepers in Kosovo. Authorities were investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, Crews added.

Kalinofski had served in Kosovo since November. He had been assigned to A Company, Task Force 1-32nd Infantry Regiment in Fort Frum, New York. He is survived by his parents, who reside in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Some 5,000 U.S. soldiers serve as part of the peacekeeping force in Kosovo. In 1999, NATO and the United Nations took control of the province after an air campaign that ended Slobodan Milosevic's crackdown against the ethnic Albanian majority.

Brian was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and put on a series of medications. In 2008, he was charged with the attempted murder of his wife.
