Are the mythological characters/creatures in Xena & Hercules true to the ancient tales? If not, in what ways were they changed? Were they changed for the better? Or for the worse?

I liked RenPics version of Hercules far better than the ancient tales and old movies. If they hadn't changed him for the better, I'd have never watched the show, nor own the DVDs.

The mythological characters aren't even true to each other in the case, for example, of Ares. The 'Hercules' Ares never stops trying to kill his own family members, while the Xena Ares starts out being HALF the god of Hercules and ends up being a whining little puppy dog. The mythological Ares was neither as bad as Hercules' or as good as Xena's representation.
I doubt that Alcmene was quite the little angel she was portrayed to be in Hercules, else the mythological Hercules would have turned out a little better.
Iolaus was the one character that probably was true to 'life'; after Hercules' death or ascension or whatever, Iolaus helps Hercules' 52 sons. Of course, the myth Iolaus was Hercules' nephew (and probably younger) and the shows PTB changed that, and I can guess why. Not so sure why they made Iphicles older than Herc instead of his twin, or why Iolaus was two years older as well.
Just tv, I guess.
