According to the guide, Esme met Carlisle while a teenager and had a crush on him. And that had me wondering if Esme & Carlisle would have had a similar love story to Edward's & Bella's love story if Carlisle had stuck around.
I don't write fanfic, but if I did, I think I'd rewrite their first meeting and the outcome to that event.
