I just couldn't decide...
Will the Circle Be Unbroken Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
I was standing by my window, On one cold and cloudy day When I saw that hearse come rolling For to carry my mother away
Will the circle be unbroken By and by, lord, by and by Theres a better home a-waiting In the sky, lord, in the sky I said to that undertaker Undertaker please drive slow For this lady you are carrying Lord, I hate to see here go
Will the circle be unbroken By and by, lord, by and by Theres a better home a-waiting In the sky, lord, in the sky
Oh, I followed close behind her Tried to hold up and be brave But I could not hide my sorrow When they laid her in the grave
Will the circle be unbroken By and by, lord, by and by Theres a better home a-waiting In the sky, lord, in the sky
I went back home, my home was lonesome Missed my mother, she was gone All of my brothers, sisters crying What a home so sad and lone
Will the circle be unbroken By and by, lord, by and by Theres a better home a-waiting In the sky, lord, in the sky
We sang the songs of childhood Hymns of faith that made us strong Ones that mother maybelle taught us Hear the angels sing along
Will the circle be unbroken By and by, lord, by and by Theres a better home a-waiting In the sky, lord, in the sky
-------
Unbroken Chain Grateful Dead
Blue light rain, whoa unbroken chain, Looking for familiar faces in an empty window pane.
Listening for the secret, searching for the sound But I could only hear the preacher and the baying of his hounds.
Willow sky, whoa, I walk and wonder why, They say love your brother, but you will catch it when you try.
Roll you down the line boy, drop you for a loss, Ride you out on a cold railroad and nail you to a cross.
November and more, as I wait for the score, They're telling me forgiveness is the key to every door. A slow winder day a night like forever, Sink like a stone, float like a feather.
Lilac rain, unbroken chain, Song of the sawhet owl. Out on the mountain, it'll drive you insane, Listening to the winds howl
Unbroken chain of sorrow and pearls, Unbroken chain of sky and sea. Unbroken chain of the western wind, Unbroken chain of you and me.

Iris is one of those artists I should like, but just can't get past the vocals. Lucinda Williams is another. And....I can't believe I'm admitting this one....Emmylou Harris. I am just not a fan of her singing, though I completely respect her as an artist. Okay, y'all can kill me now! I can understand not being a fan of someone's voice but liking what they represent. I love the songs of Laura Nyro, I think they are really magnificent, but I can't listen to her sing them for more than a song or two. And to some extent, I have the same problem with Joni Mitchell but I'm much more tolerant of her now that decades of singing and smoking have lowered and roughened her voice. I'm sorry that you are missing some of the impact of one of my favorite singers. Her voice is not my favorite type of women's voices (it sometimes reminds me of a thin whip like thing, I much prefer the more voluptuous sounds of Linda Ronstadt ). But I feel hopelessly in love with Emmylou's voice on her first album in the song "Pieces of the Sky". The breathing of the almost perfectly crystalline anguish of the word "solutions" won my heart forever. Early in her career someone called her a Okie Madonna (this was long before the one named wonder appeared on the scene). I find this description still rather apt. It rather captures the odd way she mixes traditional "roots" music with her own brand of spiritual emotionalism. But hey, what do I know? I can listen to Marrianne Faithfull for hours on end and follow it up with Stevie Nicks. I have had many head injuries. Remember, no music police, right? In my book, you're still at the head of the list in knowing and really understanding music. Maeve

I dig my toes into the sand. The ocean looks like a thousand diamonds strewn across a blue blanket. I lean against the wind, pretend that I am weightless and in this moment I am happy.
I wish you were here I wish you were here I wish you were here I wish you were here.
I lay my head onto the sand. The sky resembles a backlit canopy with holes punched in it. I'm counting UFOs. I signal them with my lighter and in this moment I am happy, happy.
I wish you were here I wish you were here I wish you were here I wish you were here.
The world's a roller coaster and I am not strapped in. Maybe I should hold with care, but my hands are busy in the air.
I wish you were here I wish you were here I wish you were here I wish you were here.

I saw the LIGHT in your window tonight I saw two shadows holding each other tight I know the TRUTH when I look in your eyes I saw the light in your window tonight
"I Saw The Light" - Wynonna
"Voluptuous" - what a great way to describe a female voice, Maeve! That's my favorite kind of voice as well, though I dearly love Alison Krauss, Eva Cassidy, Enya, and others who, for the most part, aren't as "full-bodied". Lol - voluptuous - that's great!
Thank you for your very kind compliments. But my music knowledge is very specialized. I know a lot about country, for instance, but very little about other contemporary genres. Just an artist here and there. I'm familiar with quite a few vocalists of the big band era, but don't know much about jazz or blues. But, I can usually find something to appreciate in most kinds of music.

Siren, stop that. Yes, you may know *more* about country music than you think you do about other types of music. But don't you see that (to mangle a lyric) you have the "music in you?" That is one of things that you share with scrapgold, yinyang, and msllpunkmitchell and why I learn so much from you all. You can hear music, I mean fully hear it and understand it. That is a mighty potent gift -- revel in it, please don't let that silly thing called modesty make you stop talking.
That goes for all of you. Even Phalon.

Crown of Worms ~ Megadeth
I am the author, dream up your pain Drink as did Bacchus, rebel just like Cain Lord of the city, I shall remain All pandemonium, I shall reign Sit in my fortress, up on my hill Drinking the wine, 'til I've had my fill Building up high, my castle walls Oh, to veil my splendid fall
I present you, I present to you, I present you this crown of worms
Surrounding myself with mysery Drawn curtains heavy of my history Exquisite I am, perfect unity On my left hand is false majesty I feign affection, efute the true story Dispute with creation, the lie is my glory I care for no one, my gospel is death For me the light's gone, only darkness is left
I present you, I present to you, I present you this crown of worms
As black in deed, as cold as stone A commandment of one, as proud as gold As neglected in spirit, as time is old As legion is numbers, as legend is told I am alone, with the agony of truth My power of will, my judgement and chain My end is knowledge and conscience of guilt, My final confusion hidden from me till I'm done
So many great words in this one, it's hard to pick. Bacchus, pandemonium, feigned - you choose.

Shania Twain "I won't leave you lonely"
Together-midnight in summer The air's so much warmer Falling in love under starlight Holding on so tight-together
Chorus: I won't leave you lonely tonight I want you to hold me all night It's gonna be alright I won't leave you lonely tonight
Imagine-the air filled with jasmine The breeze blows with passion You and me dance with desire The moon is on fire-imagine
(Chorus)
Je t'aime beaucoup mon amour You are the one I adore
I won't leave you lonely tonight I want you to hold me all night It's gonna be alright No you won't be lonely tonight

My bad. Oddly enough, I heard about them a really long time ago when Bonnie Rait (of all people) entined them. These folks do deserve a listen. They are sort of a blend of jazz, gypsy music and old-style (pre-war) French nightclub music. Belle du Berry must channel Edith Piaf. Sorry for the nasty translation, I haven't used my French in a long time. (NOTE TO AUTO-Edit: there are no "bad" words in this.) Marrakesh Express ~ Crosby, Stills and Nash
Whoopa, hey mesa, hooba huffa, hey meshy goosh goosh.
Looking at the world through the sunset in your eyes, Traveling the train through clear Moroccan skies Ducks, and pigs, and chickens call, animal carpet wall to wall American ladies five-foot tall in blue. Sweeping cobwebs from the edges of my mind, Had to get away to see what we could find. Hope the days that lie ahead bring us back to where they've led listen not to what's been said to you.
Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express. Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express, they're taking me to Marrakesh. All aboard the train. All aboard the train.
I've been saving all my money just to take you there. I smell the garden in your hair. Take the train from Casablanca going south, blowing smoke rings from the corners of my m m m m mouth. Colored cottons hang in the air, charming cobras in the square. Striped djellebas we can wear at home. Well, let me hear ya now.
Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express. Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express, they're taking me to Marrakesh.
Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express. Wouldn't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express, they're taking me to Marrakesh. All on board the train, All on board the train, All on board!

Dead Man, Dead Man
Bob Dylan
Uttering idle words from a reprobate mind Clinging to strange promises, dying on the line Never being able to separate the good from the bad Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it It's making me feel so bad.
Dead man, dead man When will you arise ? Cobwebs in your mind Dust upon your eyes.
Satan got you by the heel, there's bird's nest in your hair Do you have any faith at all ? Do you have any love to share ? The way that you hold you head, cursing God with every move Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it What are you trying to prove ?
Dead man, dead man When will you arise ? Cobwebs in your mind Dust upon your eyes.
The glamor and the bright lights, and the politics of sin The ghetto that you build for me is the one you're living in The race of the engine that overrules your heart Ooh, I can't stand it, I can't stand it Pretending that you're so smart......

Little Armalite Anon.
I was stopped by a soldier he said you are swine He hit me with his rifle and he kicked me in the groin I begged and I peddled all me manners were polite But sure all the time I'm thinking of me little armalite
And its down in the Bogside that's where I long to be Lying in the dark with a provo company A comrade on me left and another one on me right And a clip of ammunition for me little armalite
Well a brave RUC man came walking down our street 600 British soldiers he had lined up at his feet "come out ye cowardly Fenians come on out and fight" but he prayed I'm only joking when he heard the armalite
Well the army came to visit me was in the early hours The saracens and solodins and fevered armored cowards They thought they had me covered but I gave them all a fright With me armor piercing bullets of me little armalite
When Harry came to Belfast to see the battles won The generals they had told him we've got them on the run But corporals and privates when on patrol at night Call for reinforcements its the bloody armalite

Cause all you women is low down GAMBLERs, Cheating like I don't know how, But baby, baby, there's fever in the funk house now. This low down bitching got my poor feet a itching, You know, you know the deuce is still wild.

Gnashing of teeth. I bet they do...... The woman who co-wrote (with Bert Martin) and first recorded “there is a house in New Orleans…” was named Georgia Turner (She lived in Kentucky). Turner made 117.50 dollars from this song. She died in poverty in 1969. Nina Simone, Marianne Faithfull, Dylan, the Animals, Waylon Jennings -- and oddles of other folks also covered it. Dolly Parton's Version There is a house down in New Orleans Down in the vieux carre A house they call the rising sun Where love and money are made My father he was a gamblerMother died when I was youngAnd I've worked since then To please the men At the house of the rising sun There is a house Down in New Orleans They call the rising sun Its been the ruin of many a good girl And oh god, you know I'm one So mothers you go telling all your daughters Not to do what I have done To live a life of sin, shame and strife In the house of the rising sun There is a house in New Orleans They call the rising sun Its been the ruin of many a good girl And oh god, you know I'm one Oh god, you know I'm one Here are the traditional lyrics : There is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun. It's been the ruin of many a poor girl, and me, O God, for one. If I had listened what Mamma said, I'd 'a' been at home today. Being so young and foolish, poor boy, let a rambler lead me astray. [why the use of the word boy here?] Go tell my baby sister never do like I have done to shun that house in New Orleans they call the Rising Sun. My mother she's a tailor; she sold those new blue jeans. My sweetheart, he's a drunkard, Lord, Lord, drinks down in New Orleans. The only thing a drunkard needs is a suitcase and a trunk. The only time he's satisfied is when he's on a drunk. Fills his glasses to the brim, passes them around only pleasure he gets out of life is hoboin' from town to town. One foot is on the platform and the other one on the train. I'm going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain. Going back to New Orleans, my race is almost run. Going back to spend the rest of my days beneath that Rising Sun next word: young Maeve

Blaze of Glory-Bon Jovi
I wake up in the morning And I raise my weary head I've got an old coat for a pillow And the earth was last night's bed I don't know where I'm going Only God knows where I've been I'm a devil on the run A six gun lover A candle in the wind
When you're brought into this world They say you're born in sin Well at least they gave me something I didn't have to steal or have to win Well they tell me that I'm wanted Yeah, I'm a wanted man I'm a colt in your stable I'm what Cain was to Abel Mister catch me if you can
I'm going out in a blaze of glory Take me now but know the truth I'm going out in a blaze of glory Lord I never drew first But I drew first blood I'm no one's son Call me YOUNG gun You ask about my conscience And I offer you my soul You ask if I'll grow to be a wise man Well I ask if I'll grow old You ask me if I've known love And what it's like to sing songs in the rain Well, I've seen love come And I've seen it shot down I've seen it die in vain
Shot down in a blaze of glory Take me now but know the truth 'Cause I'm going down in a blaze of glory Lord I never drew first But I drew first blood. I'm the devil's son Call me young gun
Solo
Each night I go to bed I pray the Lord my soul to keep No I ain't looking for FORGIVENESS But before I'm six foot deep Lord, I got to ask a favor And hope you'll understand 'Cause I've lived life to the fullest Let this boy die like a man Staring down a bullet Let me make my final stand

Like A Stone ~ Audioslave
On a cobweb afternoon In a room full of emptiness By a freeway I confess I was lost in the pages Of a book full of death
Reading how we'll die alone And if we're good we'll lay to rest Anywhere we want to go
In your house I long to be Room by room patiently I'll wait for you there Like a stone I'll wait for you there Alone
On my deathbed I will pray To the gods and the angels Like a pagan to anyone Who will take me to heaven To a place I recall I was there so long ago The sky was bruised The wine was bled And there you led me on
In your house I long to be Room by room patiently I'll wait for you there Like a stone I'll wait for you there Alone
And on I read Until the day was done And I sat in regret Of all the things I've done For all that I've blessed And all that I've wronged In dreams until my death I will wander on
