Shine on you crazy diamond - pink floyd Remember when you were young, You shone like the sun. Shine on you crazy diamond. Now there's a look in your eyes, Like black holes in the sky. Shine on you crazy diamond. You were caught on the crossfire Of childhood and stardom, Blown on the steel breeze. Come on you target for faraway laughter, Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!

Accidentally Like a Martyr
Warren Zevon
The phone don't ring And the sun refused to shine Never thought I'd have to pay so dearly For what was already mine For such a long, long time
We made mad love Shadow love Random love And abandoned love Accidentally like a martyr The hurt gets worse and the heart gets harder
The days slide by Should have done, should have done, we all sigh Never thought I'd ever be so lonely After such a long, long time Time out of mind
We made mad love Shadow love Random love And abandoned love Accidentally like a martyr The hurt gets worse and the heart gets harder

I didn't really become a fan of Warren until a friend gave me a copy of 'Genius' shortly before I heard of his diagnosis. I glommed onto the desperation in some of his lyrics, the irony, social commentary, dark humor and dry wit in others and it was instant love. I remember where I was exactly when I heard on my car radio that he had passed and cried.
A little Pat Benatar now...
We're running with the Shadows Of The Night So baby take my hand, it'll be all right Surrender all your dreams to me tonight They'll come true in the end
You said - oh girl, it's a cold world When you keep it all to yourself I said you can't hide on the inside All the pain you've ever felt Ransom my heart, but baby don't look back Cause we got nobody else

Hi ms.ll, how are you? missed reading you! nice choice of music and an even nicer libation for WZ. Linda Ronstadt did some interesting covers of his stuff... And thanks for sending me off to find some Pat Benatar -- it is just the right touch. Robert Earl Keen Sonora's Death Row Me and the boy's we cinched up our saddles and rode to Sonora's last night Gun's hanging proud, daring out loud for any one looking to fight Card cheats and rustlers would run for their holes when the boys from the old broken O Rode up and reined on the street that they named Sonora's Death Row Mescal is free at Amanda's saloon for the boy's from the old broken O Saturday nights in the town of Sonora are the best in all Mexico They've got guitars and trumpets and sweet senoritas who won't want to let you go You'd never believe such a gay happy time on the street called Sonora's Death Row Inside Amanda's we was a dancin' with all of Amanda's gals I won some silver at seven card stud so I was out doin' my pals But the whiskey and mescal, peso cigars drove me outside for some air Somebody whispered "Your life or your money", I reached but my gun wasn't there I woke up face down in Amanda's back alley aware of the fool I had been Rushed to my pony, grabbed my Winchester and entered Amanda's again Where I saw my partners twirling my pistols and throwing my money around Blinded by anger, I jacked the lever and one of them fell to the ground Amanda's got silent like night in the desert, my friends stared in pure disbelief Amanda was kneeling beside the dead cowboy plainly expressing her grief And as I bowed my head a trembled shot through me my six-gun was still at my side I felt my pockets, there was my money, I fell to my knees and I cried A nightmare of mescal is all that it was for no one had robbed me at all I wish I was dreaming the sound of the gallows they're testing just outside the wall The mescal's still free at Amanda's saloon for the boy's from the old Broken O I'd give a ransom to drink there today and be free of Sonora's Death Row next word is pockets Maeve

This song rolls through my head every Wednesday.
Just Got Paid ~ ZZ Top
I just got paid today, Got me a pocket full of change. Said, I just got paid today, Got me a pocket full of change. If you believe like workin' hard all day, Just step in my shoes and take my pay.
I was born my papa's son, When I hit the ground I was on the run. I had one glad hand and the other behind. You can have yours, just give me mine. When the hound dog barkin' in the black of the night, Stick my hand in my pocket, everything's all right.
I just got paid today, Got me a pocket full of change. Said, black sheep, black, do you got some wool? Yes, I do, man, my bag is full. It's the root of evil and you know the rest But it's way ahead of what's second best.

Mary Jane : Alanis Morisette
What's the matter Mary Jane, you had a hard day As you place the don't disturb sign on the door You lost your place in line again, what a pity You never seem to want to dance anymore It's a long way down On this roller coaster The last chance streetcar Went off the track And you're on it. I hear you're counting sheep again Mary Jane What's the point of trying to DREAM anymore I hear you're losing weight again Mary Jane Do you ever wonder who you're losing it for Well it's full speed baby In the wrong direction There's a few more bruises If that's the way You insist on heading Please be honest Mary Jane Are you happy

Roy Orbison - In Dreams
A candy-colored clown they call the sandman Tiptoes to my room every night Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper Go to sleep. everything is all right.
I close my eyes, then I drift away Into the magic night. I softly say A silent prayerlike dreamers do. Then I fall asleep to dream my dreams of you.
In dreams I walk with you. in dreams I talk to you. In dreams youre mine. all of the time were together In dreams, in dreams.
But just before the dawn, I awake and find you gone. I cant help it, I cant help it, if I cry. I remember that you said goodbye.
Its too bad that all these things, can only happen in my dreams Only in dreams in beautiful dreams.
I'm going to have to get out my Roy Orbison today. Sigh.

Lady Stardust - David Bowie
People stared at the makeup on his face Laughed at his long black hair, his animal grace The boy in the bright blue jeans Jumped up on the stage Lady Stardust sang his songs Of darkness and disgrace
And he was alright, the band was altogether Yes he was alright, the song went on forever Yes he was awful nice Really quite out of sight And he sang all night long
Femme fatales emerged from shadows To watch this creature fair Boys stood upon their chairs To make their point of view I smiled sadly for a love I could not obey Lady Stardust sang his songs Of darkness and dismay
And he was alright, the band was altogether Yes he was alright, his song went on forever And he was awful nice Really quite paradise And he sang all night, all night long
Oh how I sighed when they asked if I knew his name
For he was alright, the band was altogether Yes he was alright, and his song went on forever He was awful nice Really quite paradise He sang all night long

Thanks, Maeve. Your chosen word, "seeds", reminded me of a lovely old Kathy Mattea song, written by Pat Alger and Ralph Murphy, with just that word as the title.
BTW, a friend of mine had a cat named Ziggy, too. So, you're a cat person, eh? See, I knew I liked you!
~~~~~~~
Sometimes I stop on my way home, and watch the children play And I wonder if they wonder what they'll be some day Some will dream a big dream and make it all come true While others go on dreaming of things they'll never do
We're all just seeds In God's hands We start the same But where we land Is sometimes fertile soil And sometimes sand We're all just seeds In God's hand
I saw a friend the other day I hardly recognized He'd done a lot of living since I'd last looked in his eyes He told his tale of how he'd failed, the lessons he'd been taught But he offered no excuses And he left me with this thought
We're all just seeds In God's hands We start the same But where we land Is sometimes fertile soil And sometimes sand We're all just seeds In God's hand
As I'm standing at a CROSSROADS once again I'm reminded, we're all the same when we begin And in the end...
We're all just seeds In God's hands We start the same But where we land Is sometimes fertile soil And sometimes sand We're all just seeds In God's hands We're all just seeds In God's hands
Gotta be "Crossroads" performed by Cream.
I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees. I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees. Asked the Lord above for mercy, "Save me if you please."
I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride. I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride. Nobody seemed to know me, everybody passed me by.
I'm going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side. I'm going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side. You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside.
You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy Willie Brown. You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy Willie Brown. And I'm standing at the crossroads, believe I'm sinking down.
When I Was a Boy - Dar Williams
I won't forget when Peter Pan came to my house, took my hand I said I was a boy; I'm glad he didn't check. I learned to fly, I learned to fight I lived a whole life in one night We saved each other's lives out on the pirate's deck.
And I remember that night When I'm leaving a late night with some friends And I hear somebody tell me it's not safe, someone should help me I need to find a nice man to walk me home.
When I was a boy, I scared the pants off of my mom, Climbed what I could climb upon And I don't know how I survived, I guess I knew the tricks that all boys knew.
And you can walk me home, but I was a boy, too.
I was a kid that you would like, just a small boy on her bike Riding topless, yeah, I never cared who saw. My neighbor come outside to say, "Get your shirt," I said "No way, it's the last time I'm not breaking any law."
And now I'm in this clothing store, and the signs say less is more More that's tight means more to see, more for them, not more for me That can't help me climb a tree in ten seconds flat
When I was a boy, See that picture? That was me Grass-stained shirt and dusty knees And I know things have gotta change, They got pills to sell, they've got implants to put in, they've got implants to remove
But I am not forgetting...that I was a boy too
And like the woods where I would creep, it's a secret I can keep Except when I'm tired, 'cept when I'm being caught off guard And I've had a lonesome awful day, the conversation finds its way To catching fire-flies out in the backyard.
And I so tell the man I'm with about the other life I lived And I say now you're top gun, I have lost and you have won And he says, "Oh no, no, can't you see
When I was a girl, my mom and I we always talked And I picked flowers everywhere that I walked. And I could always cry, now even when I'm alone I seldom do And I have lost some kindness But I was a girl too. And you were just like me, and I was just like you
Reunions-Carly Simon
First one in the city Wearin' all those grass stained jeans Nothing is forgotten, everyone is pleased Someone got his hair cut The girls have lots to say His friends had felt more comfortable With it worn the other way And I don't know if I'll see you again
Next one at the old house Snow is on the ground Photographs and wine are passed around Someone toasts an absent friend Another takes his seat They gather round the dying fire But the circle's not complete And I don't know if I'll see you again
Last one by the highway Wind blows through thin smiles Someone made a wrong turn Missed a joke by miles Someone got their hair cut A tear is in her eye But no one even comments Except to say, except to say 'Goodbye' And I don't know if I'll see you again
Hey Siren, want a cat? We have 6 -- all rescued cats, and 2 somewhat calm feral cats [ok, 8 cats] (yes, we are just daft enough to run a heater on the back porch for them in the winter...), a couple of friendly feral dogs, a trio of possums. And that is the in town list...good thing we have close to an acre of land -- well, we would if we could lay it flat. I couldn't resist this one: Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs Yodel: Ho-la-la-ee-ay Ho-la-la-ee-ay Ho-la-la-ee-ay-ee-la-ee-ay-ee-lee-ay Ho-la-la-ee-ay Ho-la-la-ee-ay Ho-la-la-ee-ay-ee-la-lee-ay-lee-o-lee-ay (repeat) I'd like to dance and tap my feet But they won't keep in rhythm You see, I washed them both today And I can't do nothing with 'em Chorus: Ho hum the tune is dumb The words don't mean a thing Isn't this a silly song For anyone to sing? Shine Down ~ Godsmack
So tired sleeping through the day Bloodshot eyes and sweat from my body And I picked my head up yesterday Found the reason of hope left inside of me
But I still believe in immortal love And I know there's someone above
Shine down, don't take it away from me, no And I know you know how, yeah Shine down, just give me a chance to feel it It's taken forever to get me off the ground
Haunted silence overwhelming me Deny takes it's toll on my sanity And I know I've been away too long All these years I've been hiding I'm feeling I'm coming strong
But I still believe in immortal love And I know there's someone that's up above Show me a path to find my way And give me a reason pray
Shine down, don't take it away from me, no And I know you know how, yeah Shine down, just give me a chance to feel it It's taken forever to get me off the ground
Go down the road called Yesterday Take a left on a lost highway And make a right on Memory Lane Drive until you feel the pain
And at the river of tears take one last turn And cross the bridge that just won't burn A run down house is love's graveyard That's where you'll find my haunted heart
Well my HAUNTED heart can't rest in peace It's BURIED with her memory And it's a living hell here after dark All alone with a haunted heart
Late at night a slamming door Shadows move across the floor Footsteps fall on silent stairs I hear her call but no one's there
Her photograph hangs by the bed A grim reminder love is dead A love I killed just won't depart It's living in my haunted heart
Well my haunted heart can't rest in peace It's buried with her memory And it's a living hell here after dark All alone with a haunted heart I said I'm all alone with a haunted heart
Buried Alive In The Blues
Janis Joplin
All caught up in a landslide, bad luck pressing in from all sides Just got knocked off of my easy ride, Buried alive in the blues
Sunday morning everybody’s in bed, I’m On the street, I’m talking out of my head, This dumb brick wall ain’t heard a word That I’ve said, I’m buried alive in the blues
I’m buried alive, oh yeah, in the blues I’m buried alive, somebody help me, in the blues
I beg for mercy, I pray for rain, I can’t be the one to accept all this blame, Something here’s trying to pollute my brain, I’m buried alive in the blues.
It’s real hard you know, it’s real hard being buried alive It’s real hard being buried alive When you’re buried alive they walk right on by you. When you’re buried alive they never care about you. When you’re buried alive, oh, you reach out for somebody, And when you’re buried alive you get can’t seem to press on through Being buried alive is a bad condition; it’s a real weird situation
I'm sailing away Set an open course for the virgin sea 'Cause I've got to be free Free to face the life that's ahead of me
On board I'm the CAPTAIN So climb aboard We'll search for tomorrow On every shore And I'll try, oh Lord, I'll try To carry on
I look to the sea Reflections in the waves SPARK my memory Some happy, some sad I think of childhood friends And the dreams we had
We lived happily forever So the story goes But somehow we missed out On the pot of gold But we'll try best that we can to carry on
(yeah)
A gathering of angels appeared above my head They sang to me this song of hope and this is what they said
Come sail away Come sail away Come sail away with me (you guys)
Come sail away Come sail away Come sail away with me
Come sail away Come sail away Come sail away with me (you guys ha)
Come sail away Come sail away Come sail away with me
I thought that they were angels But much to my surprise We climbed aboard their starship And headed for the star thay said'
Court and Spark Joni Mitchell
Love came to my door With a sleeping roll And a madman's soul He thought for sure I'd seen him Dancing up a river in the dark Looking for a woman To court and spark
He was playing on the sidewalk For passing change When something strange happened Glory train passed through him So he buried the coins he made In People's Park And went looking for a woman To court and spark
It seemed like he read my mind He saw me mistrusting him And still acting kind He saw how I worried sometimes I worry sometimes
"All the guilty people," he said They've all seen the stain- On their daily bread On their Christian names I cleared myself I sacrificed my blues And you could complete me I'd complete you
His eyes were the color of the sand And the sea And the more he talked to me The more he reached me But I couldn't let go of L.A. City of the fallen angels
I remember walking 'round the court square sidewalk Looking in windows at things I couldn't want There's Johnson's Hardware and Morgan's Jewelry And the ol' Lee King's apothecary They were the little man The little man
I go back now and the stores are all empty Except for an old Coke sign from 1950 BOARDED up like they never existed Or renovated and called historic districts There goes the little man There goes the little man
Now the COURT square's just a set of streets That the people go round but they seldom think 'Bout the little man that built this town Before the big money shut him down And killed the little man Oh the little man
He pumped your gas and he cleaned your glass And one cold rainy night he fixed your flat The new stores came where you do it yourself You buy a lotto ticket and food off the shelf Forget the little man Forget about that little man
He hung on there for a few more years But he couldn't sell slurpees And he wouldn't sell beer Now the bank rents the station To a man down the road Who sells velvet Elvis and Second-hand clothes There goes little man There goes another little man
Now the stores are lined up in a concrete strip You can buy the whole world with just one trip And save a penny cause it's jumbo size And they don't even realize They're killing the little man Oh the little man
It wasn't long ago when I was a child An old black man came with his mule and his plow He broke the ground where we grew our garden Back before we'd all forgotten about the little man The little man
Long live the little man God bless the little man
Alan Jackson - "Little Man"
Is that song brilliant, or what? But I hate that he chickened out, and didn't nail the listener with "YOU'RE killing the little man" instead of changing tense in the middle of the verse, and saying "They're killing the little man".
Finally came up with one for "denial". You nearly stumped me, Desire. I knew there was a song with that word, but couldn't quite put my finger on it. But when I quit thinking about it so hard, my brain kept working away and came up with it later, right out of the blue. Weird how that works. This old boy stood up in the aisle Said he'd been living a life of DENIAL And he cried as he talked about WASTED years I couldn't believe what I heard It was my life word for word And all of the sudden it was clear
It's the simple things in life Like the kids at home and a loving wife That you miss the most, when you lose control And everything you love starts to disappear The devil takes your hand and says no fear Have another shot, just one more beer Yeah, I've been there, that's why I'm here.
From the coast of gold, across the seven seas I’m travelin on, far and wide But now it seems, I‘m just a stranger to myself And all the things I sometimes do, it isn‘t me but someone else I close my eyes and think of home Another city goes by in the night Ain’t it funny how it is You never miss if till it is gone away And my heart is lying there And will be till my dying day
Refrain: So understand Don’t waste your time always searching for Those wasted years Face up... make your stand And realize you’re living in the golden years
--- Siren, I'm hoping it is about time for another Trio CD. It amuses me to no end that Linda, who once broke her foot kicking a wall because she couldn't hit a note "right," says she totally defers to Emlou on the Trio stuff.
