It's been weeks, Katina! How many games have there been since your last update? Three, I believe? How has our team fared? And I do think of it as "our Cats" - it's been years that we've gone through footy seasons here together; the Cats are like the Whoosh Home Footy Team, just as I think of Siren's Sooner Gals as the home women's basketball team. But I've seen basketball games, and know most of the rules...enough to actually follow a game and know what's going on anyway. I've never seen footy, and though you've patiently explained it many times, (through no fault of your own) all I remember is that there are four goal posts, and you get to yell at the refs, sometimes drive Utes, and drink beer - though not all three at the same time. Oh, and the players have cool positions like ruckman, rover, ruck rover, half-forward, and back pocket. Actually I got that part from a website that didn't explain the positions, but merely said there are "cool positions like ruckman, rover, ruck rover, half-forward, and back pocket." Funny, it's the same web-site where I stumbled across the ghastly cane toad, and I went there not to find cane toads or footy, but to two-minute drill marine debris, of which neither cane toads nor footy is considered. Marine Debris would be a cool name for a footy star, and I wonder which cool position he would play? Ruck Rover Marine Debris, and he sounds French. Do they play footy in France? He immigrated to Australia then, to play the sport he loved, but only read about on message boards and web-sites devoted to cane toads and footy....and other things - except Marine Debris; he was not mentioned at all. Here's what they have to say about footy....an accurate description? www.mentalfloss.com/difference/?p=83Go Marine Debris! Go Cats!

Sorry for the delay Lady P, been laughing so hard it was impossible to type. Just two games since the nail biter against Freo, both solid but unspectacular wins, against the Lions and the Tigers, which I guess now makes us kings of the jungle; sandwiched in between those two was a weekend with no "regular" footy, instead a match commemorating 150 years of Aussie rules with two teams comprising the best players from all clubs [ needless to say we had a large representation ] This Friday night we take on the Collingwood Magpies in what shapes as a big game, expecting a crown of around seventy five to eighty thousand, should be a cracker with nothing left at the end but a few black and white feathers and one satiated feline. Still not playing consistent footy but we're eight and zip and on top of the ladder so can't complain to much about that. Yeah reckon Ruck Rover would be a good position for new recruit, the dashing Frenchman Marine Debris, give us a nice cosmopolitan flavour with him alongside David Wojcinski [ polish ancestry ] and if we draft one of our young Scholarship Players next year we'll also have Ranga Ediriwickrama [ Sri Lankan heritage ] as well, throw in one American supporter and we're working toward a United Nations of footy. And yep, that's a fairly accurate description in the link, love this part ......................... "Australian Rules Football (“Aussie Rules” or, more charmingly, “Footy”) is what happens when a penal colony decides to play rugby." ................ cheeky sods. Oh year, and they play footy in France, well kinda, Rugby and Soccer, neither of which is considered "real" footy down here.

About six hours before we take to the field against the Carlton Blues, which will hopefully see us bounce back from last weeks match ........................ oh did I forget to mention we got beaten last week, well beaten is not exactly how I'd describe it, flogged and humiliated is closer to the truth, our heaviest defeat since 06 ......... but merely a hiccup in our march to glory.

Oh, noooooo! A loss? Did you forget to yell at the refs with sufficient gusto? Or did they just listen with a blind ear? The @sses! Ya gotta hand it to them though, because that'd be quite a feet, I suppose, to listen with a blind ear. But because footy is a game of bodily extremities, anything is possible.
Last week is last week, though, and moving onward and upward....The Carlton Blues are gonna be singing the blues after the Cats get done with them.
Go Cats!

Ah'ha, you may have hit the nail on the head Lady P, not enough expletives hurled at the twerps in charge, I'll have to rectify that this coming Friday night when we hop into the Kangaroos.
And yep you were right, the Blues were singing the blues after we demolished them last week, so hopefully we're back on track again.
Go Cats.

Sounds like it, Katina.
Remind me to ask you about hockey, octopus, and Cats' traditions. Right now I've to get to bed....watching the Stanley Cup Final kept me up later than I intended.
Go Cats! Go Red Wings!
Go Marine Debris...whoever, and wherever you may be.

Traveled interstate last night to take on the Adelaide Crows, a fairly good side, currently in the top eight, and hard to beat at home, where the average score against them this year is 76 points. Cats hit the ground running and after two hours of the best footy we've played this year had amassed 124 points to the hapless Crows 56; it was a thing of beauty to behold, Aussie rules at it's finest, slick ball transference, hard tackling, pinpoint foot passing, superb .............. errrrr we did alright. Thirteen wins from fourteen outings, sitting on top of the ladder and with our best footy still in front of us, couldn't get much sweeter. Go Cats, back to back 08.

I'd forgotten about this. It was during the hockey Stanley Cup finals when I asked the question. It's a custom when Detroit makes the finals, that octopi are thrown out on the ice when the Red Wings score. It was started in the 50's by two brothers who owned a fish store. The eight legs on an octopus symbolize the eight games in the Stanley Cup finals, (it's only seven games now). It's weird, but it's tradition, and I wondered if Cats' fans have any such strange traditions.
You sound like the Cats fan who swallowed the canary. And the Crows had to eat crow, eh? It was something a little bird told me, and damn, it's lucky he got away before he ended up on someone's plate too.
Go Cats!

Ahhh, I've been intrigued since first reading that post where Octopus fitted into the equation, and now I know. No such strange traditions among cats fans [ that I know of anyway ] just the usual, which is not confined to Cats fans of course, no octopi but plenty of invective hurled at the poor old umpires; win lose or draw they're still blind/biased/ and they're just the names I can reprint here. You sound like the Cats fan who swallowed the canary. You could say I'm "reasonably" pleased at how the seasons unfolding.

Time for an update. BIG game tomorrow, matter of fact the next two games are big; play the second placed Bulldogs tomorrow and the third placed Hawks next week, so we're going to be tested, especially as we lost two of our star players during last weeks huge win against Fremantle, one to an unavoidable injury [ rolled ankle ] but the other from a fractured cheekbone caused by a cowardly elbow to the face. Despite this I'm quietly confident of overcoming the doggies and chalking up our 15th victory for the year and retaining top spot on the ladder. The forecast is for real footy weather, cold and wet, so if anyones planning on going make sure to rug up. Go Cats.

I'll make sure to rug up, Katina, if you tell me what the heck that means!
And I hear there is another sporting reason for Aussies to cheer lately. A customer, originally from Australia, told me the other day that for the first time in history an Aussie is wearing the yellow shirt in the Tour de France. I haven't had the chance to check out how the race is going; I'm don't even know if it's over yet.
But go Yellow Shirt Wearer Aussie Guy!
And go Cats!

I'll make sure to rug up, Katina, if you tell me what the heck that means! Rug up, ah that must be another Aussieism Lady P; it simply means to "dress warmly", in this case I'd suggest several layers of clothes, plus your thermal undies, mittens, earmuffs and a scarf, can get pretty chilly down here but I reckon that should do the trick. And I hear there is another sporting reason for Aussies to cheer lately. Yep, Cadel Evans is his name, and he's a Geelong boy as well. Think he's one second in front with about two more weeks to go yet, he was one of the favourites going in after finishing second last year, so he's well placed. Go Cats ............. Go Cadel, errrr I mean Yellow Shirt Wearer Aussie Guy.

Can....barely....move. All "rugged up" in several layers of clothes, thermal undies, mittens, earmuffs and a scarf, I feel like that kid in the "Christmas Story" movie - Ralphie's little brother, who was so bundled up, he could hardly walk and could not get up, like a turtle on its back, when he fell down. Sheesh, I seem to have rugged up on the commas in that last sentence. Sheesh, I can't even get up to do the happy dance, and cheer "Go Cats".
When's it gonna get warm there, Katina? When can I "rug down", and when I do, can I sweep the dust under it? That's what you do with all those teams the Cats are annihilating, yes?
Oh, Katina, your exuberance is so fun to watch.
Go Cats.

Well you can start to "rug down" now Lady P, weathers getting milder as we move into the first week of spring, so think you'll be safe. Anyhoo, bit embarrassing this, haven't posted in here for ages [ come to think of it haven't posted anywhere for ages ] and now I'm asking for a favour from your good self. Regular season is finito, Cats finished top [ naturally ] with twenty one wins from twenty two matches, and now we're into the business end of the year, namely the finals, so you know what that means doncha? My/our good luck charm comes into play once more, hate to trouble you but do you think you could manage again, just four weeks this time so your pinkies should have no trouble with that, and it helped get us over the line last year. Go Cats.

Katina! I'd bowl you over in a tackle, but I think Chere's already taken care of that. How could you keep something like the Cats finishing the regular season on top under the rug for so long? Oh yeah, it was cold down there, and you were already keeping under the rug to stay warm. Of course, Dear Katina, I'll keep my fingers crossed. It'll be an annual month-long event. Welcome to the 2nd Annual Fingers Crossed Celebration; actual celebration to follow the ritual uncrossing of the fingers upon the last playoff game. Hopefully, it'll be a tradition for many years to come. Go Cats! <look, I even used the smilie thingy>

You're not kidding Lady P, the poor old bones are still aching from that tackle, and yeah, that was remiss of me, should have kept our newest supporter [ that's you of course ] apprised, just kinda slipped my mind I guess ............ the cold, yeah we'll blame the cold. Knew I could rely on you Lady P, and you'll be pleased to know it'll be a shorter "annual month-long event" this year as we already played our first final this afternoon, and what a final it was, with the guys turning on champagne footy to smash the hapless Saints by 58 points, despite inaccurate kicking for goal early and then easing up in the last quarter; a thing of beauty it was I tell ya. So now we have a weeks break and advance straight to the Preliminary Final in a fortnights time. And you're correct, can see the tradition continuing for some time yet, back to back 08, then the threepeat 09, then ......... well don't wanna get to far ahead of myself. Go Cats! <look, I even used the smilie thingy> Think that's a first for you if I'm not mistaken. Go Cats.

Katina, I would have been in here earlier to offer congratulations on winning the first game of the finals, but it would have looked something like this:

Now, though, I've gotten the hang of typing with my fingers crossed.
Congratulations! Go Cats!

Six days and counting, we're through to the big one next Saturday arvo when we take on the Hawthorn Hawks, clearly the second best side all year, and hopefully still "second" best after the big game ........ *I am not nervous* I am not nervous* I am not nervous* ........... if I repeat that often enough I may just convince myself.

Sorry to put you through that Lady P, even sorrier that this time it didn't quite work; just our second loss for the entire season but unfortunately it was in the game that mattered most.
At least now you get to straighten out your pinkies, while I ........ well I get to go in search of vast amounts of mind deadening beverages or other substances of which I dare not speak [ sheesh I "almost" wish it were true ] but in truth all I'm gonna do is sit here and wallow in self pity. *sob*

Katina!!! No, that is not a yell to ask when footie season begins, though I'm sure it's coming up soon. I just wanted to get your attention. I know you enjoy your days of leisure, doing this and that, without worrying about the other thing. But here's a job for you - how's "earning a top salary (150,000 Australian dollars) for lazing around a beautiful tropical island for six months" sound? Sounds fabulous to me! Your working environment would be Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef, doing the job that the Australian government is calling "the best in the world". The job is open to anyone. Click here for a complete job description and application form: news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090113/od_afp/lifestyleaustraliatourismoffbeat_20090113032028Hhmmm....I wonder if it's open to foreign applicants? On second thought, don't click on the link. Less competition that way.
