Bottom Line: I like a good story. I do have genres I prefer over all, but a good story is all that matters when it comes down to it. My first memory of reading books on my own as a kid were Mysteries, then I moved on to ghost stories and Horror, then I moved on to Romances, then I moved back to Horror. I love to read stories that scare me, that keep me on my toes, biting my nails. So Suspense/Thrillers fit in with Horror. I've not read any Westerns, but I do love to watch them, so reading them is not out of the question. I just haven't done it yet. I'm not big on Sci-Fi, but I have read a book or two that had a good story and I enjoyed those reads. The info on the back cover and excerpt have to really pique my interest before I'll even consider reading one though. Same with Fantasy, but I like them better than Sci-Fi for sure.
If I could pick more than one on the list, I'd put a check next to most all of them. I like true stuff, I like fiction stuff, it doesn't really matter . . . just so long as it's a good read. To me that's the only genre that really counts.

That's what I tried to do, unfortunately it only registered the last one! I'm of the same mind MM, It's got to be a good story. I dont mind what genre, but I do have a passion for Sci-Fi and Fantasy.

I'm in the potpourri category - a nice florally scented one.
But I wouldn't check every genre; there are those that I don't read. Self-help - there is none. Romance - I've read probably one, and figure that pretty much has it covered. Religion, inspirational, espionage, and fitness, I don't read unless someone gives or lends one that fits into those categories, and then I feel obligated, and really don't mind feeling so.
Regency - I'm not sure what that includes. The King and I? Dukes of Hazard? Queen Latifah? No, no - that'd be a biography, which I like too.
Historical Fiction; I like that, but don't see it listed. Fictional History either. Hysterical Fiction falls under Humor, and "humor" is too broad a category; there can be humor in nearly everything. One of the funniest books I read in recent years was a nonfiction bestseller about punctuation, which is funny in itself - that a book about punctuation would make the bestseller list. Eats, Shoots, and Leaves - full of humor in the British sense.
Sarcastic humor. Underlying sarcasm with a humorous tone. Always a bonus to find in whatever I'm reading. Characters with quirk. Have quirk, will unravel. At least at some point in the story. I've read books that are not much of a story, but the characters pull it off - a story can be written about not much at all, but if the characters are well-rounded, and real enough to jump out of the book at you, it...well...makes a good story.
I honestly don't read much in the summer - too busy, and it takes forever for me to finish a book. I can't tell you how long I've been reading the two I've started now - way too long though, because I've had to face the Library Biddies to renew one of them twice. The second book is "Leaving Small's Hotel", Moonglum, and no - your response did not blow the image. Ha! It only intensified it, which I keep meaning to get on my broomstick and travel to the Land of Oz to tell you, but alas - Dorothy borrowed it, and I'm left without the means.
I read a lot of non-fiction - fluff non-fiction and not heavy stuff. Last couple non-fiction reads have been about the floral industry, and one about fruits and veggies. Every chapter is self-contained - important for me in the summer, when I may start a book and not pick it up again until a week later. And short stories - those work well for me this time of year also.
Winter is different; then I like to sink my teeth into novels.

Historical Fiction; I like that, but don't see it listed. Historical is listed below Regency. Of course I had it in mind as for romance, but it could be anything pertaining to history.
As for romance books, there are quite a bit I roll my eyes at. And I try to remember the author's name so I don't buy/read their books anymore. I like strong women with snark and backbone. I remember this one author, I only read two of her books, and in both of them the guy pretty much ignored the woman throughout the whole book; it dealt with her as she went through her daily routine stuff, and when she got frustrated at the end as to whether the guy liked her or she was just imaging it, the guy would chide her for not being so observant . . . of course he was in love with her. I still have those books somewhere. I don't want to waste someone else's time with them, and I don't like destroying books, even those I don't like, so I guess they'll stay stored somewhere until I run out of space for stuff I want to keep. I'll make sure no one knows they came from me. I wouldn't want them thrown back at me.

Ya know, I've read books where I loved the character/s, but not the story, so I guess I should say: "I like a good read."
