Film and TV veteran dies of natural causes in California home.
Jack Palance Jack Palance, the veteran of more than 100 film and TV roles, died Friday in his home in Montecito, California. Palance was 87.
The actor was often cast as an imposing tough guy in countless movies and TV shows, attaining infamy as the villain in the Alan Ladd classic Western, Shane. Palance also did stints on TV classics your Show of Shows, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and Playhouse 90.
Palance won an Oscar in 1992 for his supporting role in the Billy Crystal comedy City Slickers. The ornery actor assured himself a place in Oscar history when, during his acceptance speech, he emulated his Slickers character Curly by dropping to the floor and pumping out several one-armed push-ups.
"That's nothing, really," he told the Oscar audience. "As far as two-handed push-ups, you can do that all night, and it doesn't make a difference whether she's there or not."
Like many actors who had weathered decades in Hollywood, he had no illusions about some of the productions he had appeared in.
"Most of the stuff I do is garbage," he once said.
