General election tomorrow [ Saturday ] which will hopefully see our first woman ever elected as Prime Minister.
Julia Gillard is currently leader of the Labour party and caretaker Prime Minister after taking over leadership of the party from Kevin Rudd and calling an election, so tomorrow has the chance to be elected in her own right to be our PM ................ Go julia.

Oooo, sounds like an exciting election, Katina, and very possibly some exciting times ahead. Let us know how it turns out, and your take on the outcome.

Yeah Stepper, they're predicting the closest result in half a century, could be just one or two seats in it with the final result now known until sometime Sunday ..... and thanks for the well wishes.
I will indeed let you know the result Gams, may be a little while though, fingers crossed it's the right outcome.

Good luck to Julia, Kat.
We've enjoyed a 'first lady' here and I remember that feeling of change in the air that she brought with her. Some people here may not agree with me, but I personally think it was a change for the better (brief though it was).
Go Julia.

Ahhhh Maggie, remember her well, not everyone's cup of tea but she sure had a presence about her, I recall being frightened just watching her on TV from thousands of miles away. Well no clear result here as yet guys, possibly looking at a hung parliament, and one of the parties having to form a minority government with the independents [ sound familiar MG? ] Could be another week before we know exactly how things will play out, and the possibility of going to the polls again is not out of the question either.

New winds are blowing here in Oklahoma, too, kat. Oklahoma will elect its first woman governor this year, either Lt. Governor Jari Askins, or Congresswoman Mary Fallin. I'm voting for Jari for several reasons. And it doesn't hurt that I've seen her at many OU women's basketball games! ;D

Good to hear Siren, you [ women ] have come a long way in a relatively short time since being awarded the vote [ 1920 in America and 1902 here ] We have two women State Premiers here and hopefully our first Prime Minister shortly if the cards fall the right way in the coming days/weeks. How could you vote for anyone else but an OU fan .... hey, what if she was a Republican though, you'd be hard pressed knowing who to vote for then.

When do you go to the polls Siren?
Still no decision here, with the independents really dragging things out.
A lot of what they've been saying sounds encouraging for Julia, but they're all from conservative backgrounds and at the end of the day I think they'll throw in with the opposition and put Tony Abbott in power, at which time I'm emigrating, sheesh it would be like having George Bush in the Lodge.

Well we finally have a result and it's a good one, Julia and the Labour party have been returned with a two seat majority thanks to two independents throwing their support behind her.

Congratulations to Julia and all her supporters! But drat - though I'd never wish a Bush-like administration on anyone, I was kinda looking forward to your emigration. We would have taken you in, yanno....even if you brought that joke with you, (Stepper left you something in the "Very Punny" thread; it cracked me up).
I do have a question, though; something I've been curious about, but never got around to asking. I'm woefully uninformed when it comes to world politics (mostly by my own choosing).
How's your elections work?
This threw me. You can vote twice?

We would have taken you in, yanno....even if you brought that joke with you, (Stepper left you something in the "Very Punny" thread; it cracked me up). If I'd known that I woulda been hoping for the opposition to get in, even if it meant having a Bush clone running the country, being a lodger at your place would be a wonderful, and fascinating, experience I have no doubt. I just checked the puns thread, danged funny. I do have a question, though; something I've been curious about, but never got around to asking. I'm woefully uninformed when it comes to world politics (mostly by my own choosing). How's your elections work? Kinda similar to your own, with an elected House of Representatives and a Senate, this site will probably give you a good idea of how it works [ or totally confuse ya ] www.dfat.gov.au/facts/electoral_system.htmlThis threw me. You can vote twice? No just the once [ thank the gods ] what I meant is that in the case of a tie there would have to be another election. There's 150 seats in the House of Reps' so to form a working Government one party must have at least 76 seats, and for a while there was the very real possibility of both sides having 75 each, which would mean returning to the polls and doing it all over again. With two of the three remaining independents backing the Labor party it gives them 76 seats to the oppositions 74, which means they now have the numbers to form Government.
