I feel better about being in that minority if you're in it with me. While we're talking about cinematic sacred cows, I've never cared much for "Citizen Kane", either. I think Orson Welles was a hammy actor. IMO, his directing was a bit more subtle than his acting, but not much. You mentioned the cinematography in "The Searchers", and I'm glad you did. It is wonderful, and took full advantage of the dramatic scenery in Monument Valley. John Ford set a couple of his films in that area, and I can certainly understand why.

I feel better about being in that minority if you're in it with me. Thanks Siren. Yep we're two rebels, flying in the face of convention, a modern day Bonnie and Clyde perhaps? While we're talking about cinematic sacred cows, I've never cared much for "Citizen Kane", either. I think Orson Welles was a hammy actor. IMO, his directing was a bit more subtle than his acting, but not much. Can't really give an informed opinion on "Citizen Cain" to be honest, it's been many years, probably decades since I last saw it, and the memory's a little hazy, but I do agree with you about Orson, he certainly had a flair for the melodramatic, or a fair touch of ham as you put it. And speaking of cinematic sacred cows, while we're discussing [ debunking ] them, what do you think of Charles Laughton's first, and last, effort at directing, namely "Night of the Hunter" with Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters?

I may have seen "Night Of The Hunter" when I was a kid, but I don't remember it if I did. I do need to watch it. With a cast like that, who could resist? But my oldest sis remembers it well. Mitchum scared her silly!

Errrr no you don't Siren, believe me on that, it gives bad movies a whole new meaning, and also may just turn you off Robert and Shelley forever. Just posted in the "Who Am I, Movies Only" thread and got kinda confused when I popped in here, just noticed this thread has somehow morphed into the same thing and had to actually read back a few pages to see how this was supposed to go. How about we pick it up from "The Searchers" and use Ward Bond as the new starting point, or we could just keep going the way we are, what do ya reckon? Hope I haven't confused you, because I know I've confused myself.

No problem - good old reliable Ward Bond as Bert the Cop in...
"It's A Wonderful Life"
My problem with the "Who Am I" game is I can remember the movie, but not the character name. I guess I should just not post there, in that case, to keep this game and that one separate. No worries!

I guess I should just not post there, in that case, Bite your tongue, of course you should post there, sheesh I can't recall the correct name a lot of the time myself. Back near the start of the "Who Am I' thread it was suggested, not sure by whom, some distinguished elderly gentleman I think, that if the characters name can't be recalled just name the actor who played the character, or even just the name of the film would be fine. The only reason I mentioned it was because I'd just posted a new game on the "Who Am I" before popping in here and I thought *hello what's going on, I'm sure I just did that* got me kinda confused, which is easily done. Now where were we after all that, ah right, "It's A Wonderful Life" guess I'll go with the most obvious answer, namely ............ Jimmy Stewart.

Lol! Well, leave it to me to cause confusion. Anytime you need things thoroughly mixed up, I'm at your service!
Ah, good ole Jimmy Stewart. Boy, so many directions one could go. Hmmm...got it. I love this movie! I love its atmosphere...it's kinda spooky cool jazz hipster musical score..its attractive stars. Terrific!
In this one, Jimmy enchants a modern-day witch who puts a love spell on him.

Lol! Well, leave it to me to cause confusion. Anytime you need things thoroughly mixed up, I'm at your service! Okay I'll remember that, and believe me you won't have to try very hard to throw me into total confusion. Sounds very much like "Bell Book and Candle" you're describing methinks, with Jimmy alongside the bewitching Kim Novak.

Since it's been a while for this thread, I'm gonna jump in here with a wonderful movie I saw tonight for the first time. I'm sure it's one that will be easily recognized by the expert movie buffs that frequent here, but I thought it might be an easy way to jump start the thread again.
1946 comedy, fantasy, romance where the devil arranges for a deceased gangster to return to Earth as a well-respected judge to make up for his previous life.
I guess we could name the movie or one of the namely names and go from there?
I know, I know...making up my own rules again as I go along. It was such a good movie, tho, and I've heard the title before, but never seen it.
Anyway...I'm sure this is too easy for either one of you.

Sorry champ, must have overlooked this. Sounds like "Angel on My Shoulder" with Paul Muni and ......... errrr some other people. And don't worry about making up the rules, the only rule here is that there are no rules.

Oh, I hoped you would, scamp, for I truly adore Myrna Loy. I will watch anything with her in it. I'll take this opportunity to post this lovely photo, just because I can. ;D Though I would happily stay in the 1930s and 40s, I will mention one of Myrna's last movies in order to perhaps give fans of more current movies a chance to play along with us. How about Myrna as the mother of one of the '70s most popular leading men in... "The End"

Hey there, Katman! Fancy meeting you in a movie thread! ;D Yeah, totally unexpected Siren, small world ain't it. Paul Williams, I take it that's the song writer Paul Williams champ, sheesh can't even remember him in SATB, and can't for the life of me remember him from anything else although I know he's been in quite a few films. And you reckon you're not in the same class as Siren and myself, didn't take ya long to stump me though. Gotta hand this one off to someone else.
