I couldn't remember if there was a thread that covered this topic or not. So, apologies if this is 'misplaced'.
1974 saw the publication of the first novel by an author who I came to admire very much and whose works I still enjoy reading to this day. I actually never read his first book until some years later. I stumbled across his second book, 'The Fog', in 1976 and loved it. For an author who would later earn the distinction of being named Grand Master of Horror by the World of Horror Convention, his first two books were more like disaster stories rather than true horror. It was his third novel 'The Survivor', which set the foundations for his subsequent works. 'The Survivor', along with three others, were made into films. Although a low budget production, and probably one of those 'straight to video' releases, I did manage to find a copy on vhs in the eighties. I remember it starred Robert Powell as the lead character and was a reasonable interpretation of the book. James Herbert was the son of an east-end market stallholder and went on to sell over 54 million books worldwide, along the way he brought enjoyment to a great many people, not least myself and Vox. He died yesterday (20 march 2013) at home in bed aged 69.
R.I.P. James Herbert.

May his family and friends remember him with happy tears, and their sad tears be far and few.

Always sad when a country loses one of its icons. I hadn't heard of him, prior to your post, Moonglum, but did a drill to find out more.
"His first novel, 'The Rats', depicting a London overrun by mutant, flesh-eating rodents, was released in 1974 and its first printing of 100,000 copies sold out in three weeks, paving the way for Herbert to become Britain's leading writer of horror."
Eeew! Sounds horrific!
And not to judge a book by "his" cover, but looking at photos of Mr. Herbert, he appears to have had a wickedly delicious sense of humor....possibly in the form of dark sarcasm? Just wondering. It sounds as if a trip to the used book store here in town is warranted.

Lovely quote Jox, is it original?.
To my knowledge, yes, it is original. However, that doesn't mean I didn't hear/read it somewhere else and it stuck in my subconscious. A 2-minute drill might prove whether or not it has ever been used before.
. . . drilling . . . drilling . . . within quotes . . . without quotes . . .
Seems it is original.

Hey, Joxie - where'd it go?
When I was putzing around the house between posting yesterday, Moonglum sneaked in while I wasn't looking and made a book recommendation. I was going to look at the used bookstore today, but failed to write down the title. "The Dark" maybe?

It sounds as if a trip to the used book store here in town is warranted. You could do a lot worse then pick up a Herbert novel (or three) Gams, if you like horror/supernatural you'll most likely enjoy his work. Read most of his books and enjoyed them all, sorry to hear of his passing.

Holy Cow. it's seems I overwrote it somehow. I hit a snag when I posted. I messed it up and made two posts, then deleted one. And somehow when I quoted Moonglum, I must have clicked on 'Modify' instead. So sorry, Moonglum. If you can remember any of your post, just modify it to what it might have been.
Dang, I feel so bad about that. I guess I shouldn't post when I'm flummoxed.

Thanks, Moonglum and Katina. I'll make that jaunt to the used bookstore this afternoon, and if not successful, the library. On second thought, maybe the other way around, to save a few dollars. (Just typing aloud here.)
Holy Cow, Joxie, there shall be no flummoxing here. You leave those poor barnyard animals alone; the oxen don't deserve flumming. Now, the bewilderbeests...well, they're already confused.

Well, since I don't drink alcohol, we'll have to find something else to blame it on. The wind has been messing with my head something fierce, I guess we can blame it on sinus dizziness.

At least you have something you can blame your dizziness on, Joxie. Me? Well...I'm naturally dizzy.
Our library only has two James Herbert novels - The Secret of Crickley Hall, and The Magic Cottage. The first was checked out, so I got the second, but haven't started it yet.
I haven't made it to the used bookstore yet, either, to look for The Dark. After I read The Magic Cottage, I might see if the library biddies can order The Dark for me from a different library; they love when I ask them to do that.

Well, I'm not so blonde anymore, but I'd rather blame it on my sinuses than my hair color.
It will be nice when all 'out of print' books are turned into eBooks, and POD books. They'd never be out of print again.
I know, I'm a dreamer.
