Most of us know "The Evil Dead" has ties to Xena: way back in 1981, a very young Sam Raimi (age 20) wrote and directed it; Rob Tapert produced it, and Bruce Campbell starred in it. Even Ted Raimi got in on the action as a "Fake Shemp" - a fill-in for more than one of the cast and crew members who left the project after budget cuts and delays.
The low budget B-type film went on to become a major cult classic and spurred two sequels, making the The Evil Dead movies the largest cult film trilogy in history. It's now a media franchise.
I saw it when it first came out - and it scared the cr@p out of me, mainly because after the first 10 minutes or so, it was non-stop can-not-catch-a-breath gore. There was little time to rest between scenes. According to Wikipedia:
"Raimi made the film as gruesome as possible with no interest or fear in censorship, leading to an X rating and being cited as a video nasty. Films labeled as a "video nasty" were often highly violent and disturbing films that were widely controversial, a title often held by pornographic films and other X-rated films. While The Evil Dead was not pornographic in nature, it was considered one of the most violent films of its time.... Along with Cannibal Holocaust and I Spit on Your Grave, writer Bruce Kawin described The Evil Dead as one of the most notorious splatter films of its day. The film was banned on video in some countries; however, it was never officially banned outright."
Probably about five years or so after I first saw it, we watched it again....and laughed throughout most of it. Scary the first time around seemed you-gotta-be-kidding-me campy the second time.
Apparently, special effects gore has advanced even further during the last 30 years. "The Evil Dead" remake makes its theater debut next week. I cannot even watch the television commercials for this one - the creepy demon girl is just too disturbing looking for my aging but still over-active imagination. After laughing at me for covering my eyes during a commercial and from my description of the first movie and how scary it was at the time, LX (who of course is looking forward to seeing the remake with her friends), pulled up the theatrical trailer on-line.
It's so gruesome (the one rated Mature Audiences, not the toned-down version), people are encouraged to film their reactions and post them on Youtube. We compared the original trailer to the new one (I watched LX's reaction to the new trailer instead of the trailer itself). There was no comparison.
And judging from the audio only that I heard and LX's expressions while watching it, I will definitely not be seeing the new movie.
Anyone else?
