'k...was reminded of this yesterday after receiving a package in the mail from a wonderful & dear friend. The box contained prizes & toys & lots of love for everyone in the family including my Dylan-dog--my compainion for the past 14 years! Inside was a little duck with one of those squeezy noise makers inside. Now when Dylan was a puppy, he loved these squeezies (his fav being a plastic hot dog that made major noise). Of course, the first thing he would do would be to tear at the toy pulling off eyes, buttons, hair, anything that was "attached" on the outside. Then he would frantically maul the poor thing until he pulled out all the stuffing & the noise maker. Then he was finished with it. One day when we were at the park, there was a couple with a tiny baby at the top of "dog hill" all spread out on a blanket....they started playing with the baby's squeezy & immediately had Dylan's attention....his ears perked up & as soon as he zeroed in on the location of his favorite noise, off he flew up the hill as fast as he could go!! Of course I had to make haste up the hill also, waving my hands & yelling for them to stop squeezing & yelling at Dylan to please not steal the baby's toy....lol.....whether he recognized the urgency in my voice or just decided not to terrorize the park-goers on this day, he did a big u-ie before reaching the blanket & flew back down the hill, ears flapping in the breeze....not a care in the world! Alas, what a wonderful memory of my boy. I gave him his new squeezy last night & he took it....later I checked on him & he had his head lying on the duckie....eyes & buttons still on, squeezy still inside....I guess 14 is too mature to go tearing up your toys......

I think I feel a ramble coming on.....I'd like to share but I'm not sure if I should. People who don't have to see that everyday shouldn't be subjected to it by those of us who do.

Well, Dear Moppet - you've just given fair warning, haven't you?
Feel the rumble of a ramble and go ahead and get it out. Those who don't want to read won't, and those who do may have some compassionate words for you.
Wishing I had better ones.
Hugs.

I'm gonna say this for tonight.
This weeks number one dumbass excuse.....
"I'm releasing my dogs because the neighbors are throwing things over the fence at them."
So instead of telling the neighbors to stop, or calling the police, he gives them to us. And you know the worst part of that. The two dogs this dumbass turned in are unsocial backyard dogs who probably never saw the inside of a dog house let alone the owners house. And because of that there's not one thing we can do for them but put them down.
And even after explaining in full detail what that means to the dumbass...he still left them there.
And you know...my heart says...thank god he did because even if we put them down then at least someone will love them and hold them for that few moments while they die. But my mind says....grow the frell up and accept responsibility for the lives in your care. Would you treat your kids that way?
And while I'm in full rant mode.....and I currently don't care if I get fired for this...I'd like to tell you about Murphy....
Murphy was turned in by his owner...
Murphy was a 7 month old Mastiff mix...already a big guy must have weighed 70 pounds. He was with us for a week. And despite my best efforts I haven't figured out how not to get attached to some of these animals. Murphy was one of my favorites. Big fuzzy mellow boy.
Murphy caught Kennel Cough. Which is basically a bad cold. And because we currently house like 150 dogs and KC is really contagious we are having to put them down for it so they don't infect the rest of the animals at the shelter. And while I understand the necessity, it doesn't mean I like it.
Now people who know me know how well I usually hide my hurt. But on that day I just couldn't do it. I spent most of the afternoon feeding him treats and just sitting with him. Damn near forgot I was there to work. When it came time for him to go they let me be with him.
I swear I must have held him and cried for twenty minutes.
So someone please explain to me how it could be possible for someone who doesn't even own this dog to love him enough to be seriously wounded over his death and his own owner couldn't love him enough hang on to him.
Sorry folks...turned into a longer rant than I expected.

Scrappy...Your story made me feel so empathetic for your emotional experiences. You speak from the heart and that is a quality that you can be very proud of. I hope my goofy story makes you smile
Last night while I was sitting in here at the computer I hear our littleman tapping on the sliding glass door. He has been in our family since his mother gave birth to him in the neighbors backyard and they could not keep the entire litter so we took him in. (Z and I fell in love with him at first sight. He's black and white long haired with a black nose...a runt kitty, that snuggled up to our 13 year old dog like he was home.) So anyway he has since become the man of the house protecting all from anything that enters. Anyway back to the story. I walk into the living room and see him sitting on his hind legs and is tapping at the window like he was giving high fives. I figured it was a bug on the glass outside, but then thought maybe not since he wasn't jumping up and down as his usual chasing a bug activity. So I walk over to the door and there stuck to the glass was a good fist sized treefrog. (I personally do not like jumpy things so made sure that it was outside and not in) This cat is doing everything in his power to get this frog off the glass. Licking it...(the glass that is) pawing it...until he reverted to tapping. which made the frog move. The next thing I know there he is going nutz...meowing at the frog (if you can imagine his meow it is so much funnier...He makes the screachy mama sound). Hopping on his hind legs. Then strutting for he conquered the green jumpy thingie...I busted up laughing. You see this isn't the first experience with a frog...Once he saved me before from one that had gotten inside and was hiding in my bathtowel. I went to take a shower and he put his fur in waters way to warn me. He ran into the shower meowing the same way and when I went to grab my towel it plopped on the floor...Scared the begeezers off me only cause I didn't have pants on to scare off...He is such a Hero!

How about the fact that I have one of those computer desks that the monitor sits in the desk itself and kiddo had a friend in here this afternoon and friend screached and came running out of the room like there was an emergency. Our Little man wanted attention and so he climbed in the backside of the desk and jumped up at the glass...He scared the poor grrl...He usually just steals the mouse string playing tug of war...But he wanted to make a statement I guess. BOO!

what's your opinion about a cat that comes running every time you get the dental floss out? I don't know if it is the minty taste of the floss itself that makes him go mad...but he fights us for the stuff every night.

nope...just chews on it and we pull it away from him..He also goes after the blind cord so we bought him some chew toys in case it is his teeth but he won't play with them...He loves ribbon but will actually chew through it so we don't give it to him so he wont choke on it...

No way!! I almost lost a kitten one time when he got that stringy thing wrapped around his neck....the other end was on the doorknob & the more he pulled, the tighter it got. I was in the room but didn't realize what was happening 'til I noticed out of the corner of my eye he wasn't moving anymore....was just hangin!! No more strings on doorknobs for us! My Peaches used to go ape-crazy whenever I got the emery board out to do my nails....he would get right up in my lap & take that silly thing away from me....then he would get it in his paws & lick it like nobody's business! Almost as if it was laced with catnip!!!

Not alot of emery boards around my house, but shows littleman isn't too wierd... We had the string up problem with the lure toy that was like a fishing pole...You cast it out and let go of the button and the string winds back up. Oh man it only took one time when the string got wrapped around him to make us all go crazy trying to get it off. He plays with his toys and all he just goes nutz for dental floss the minty kind. Better then my old cat that would go nutz over icey hot. She would literally claw her way to the spot you have it rubbed on and try and lick it off. Picture me all achy resorting to stinky icy hot waddling down to my chair and as I go to sit down the cat jumped into the chair clawed onto my back and bum like the garfield toy stuck on the car window and having to call for help from the neighbor to get the whacko off me. Not funny at the time but looking back...I manage a good laugh...
