With my new roommate came two more additions. I haven't really warmed up to Mattie...is that a Boston Terrier?? She's a smart dog and she did just lose her daddy with the sudden death of Frank's partner, Gary, but I'm more of a "big dog" dog-lover, I guess. And she begs when you're eating...and I absolutely hate that. Now Sam...the cat. What a cat he is!! I love him too much already! He has the most personality of any cat I've ever known. He begs, too, when you start eating...jumping up in my chair behind me, up to the top of the back, one paw gingerly on my shoulder, then carefully walking from my shoulder to my desk, sitting down right in front of me at eye level and then reaching one paw out to try and "gather in" whatever I'm eating or hooking that one paw over the edge of my bowl to see what's inside. As long as you give him one or two licks of whatever it is you have, he's satisfied and goes away. He will absolutely try anything you're eating too. So cute and such a lover...but only when he wants, of course. If you try and initiate the contact, you might as well be talking to the wall. Such a cat!

So cute. I've thought of getting a dog to go with my cat, but then I'd have to find somewhere to keep the cat food so that the dog couldn't eat it up. And in this house, that would be hard.

Grrrrr. Me too. And Quetta begs.....which is Hubs' fault because while he's cooking, he'll give her bits and pieces. The cat too. He's got the dog standing on one side of him, and the cat on the other, waiting for their tidbits. The other cat, oddly enough, will not touch "people food" - just sniffs it and walks away.
While neither Quetta whines, nor does Dusty jump up on chairs or the table while we're eating, both of them now sit on opposite sides of the table, waiting for handouts. It drives me nuts to look down and see their puppy dog/kitty cat eyes with that expectant look.
You - are in love with a cat, TG? That's sweet....and surprising. I thought you didn't care much for cats. If that was so, glad Frank's Sam persuaded you otherwise.
Maybe it's just my cats - they were far from kittens when the dog entered the household - but over a year later and they still can not stand her being here. She has never once raised a paw, growled, or barked at either of them. The favor is not returned - both cats dig deep into their ancestry and emit wildcat-like growls from the backs of their throats whenever she is near, and Dusty the Hell Cat has got in more than his shared of bats across Quetta's nose.
I think (in the case of these three anyway) it'd be better if dogs and cats were introduced to each other when they're both at a young age.

Yeah. I figured it wouldn't work out. And I really don't need another pet. My cat was declawed long before he was given to me, so I wouldn't have to worry about the dog getting scratched. But he might get bitten though.

BTW: I read on Twitter that dogs are now getting the swine flu, so you need to keep both them and cats away from humans who are sick with it.

I have four dogs, three guinea pigs, two fiddle crabs, and a lot of fish that I don't want to try and count.
Out of the dogs:
Westley: My 50 pound American Fox hound mix that thinks he is a lap dog. He follows me everywhere like a puppy and I spoil him rotten.
Mollie: My Dad's female salt and pepper miniature schnauzer. She's a sweet heart but she's also the queen of the house. She'll boss all the other dogs around when she wants it her way.
Zack: My younger brother's male salt and pepper miniature schnauzer. Loves to chase after turned over bowls, birds, cats, shadows, cars passing the back fence, the other dogs...I think you see where this is going. Very playful and vocal dog.
Sasha: Officially my Mom's dog, but has slipping into the role of being my unofficial dog since she clings to my dog like glue. She's a border collie/blue heeler mix with beautiful colors running across her chest and legs but is super energetic. She's extremely intelligent too, which means she gets bored quickly and will get herself in trouble more times than not. She's the youngest of our dogs being only a year old. Like all of our dogs, she was a rescue. We got her at three months, after someone threw her out of a truck.
The Guinea Gang is made up of: Gus who is a male brown and orange speckled Abyssinian.
Rukia who is a female black and white Silkie.
Boo who is a male albino American. The person who gave him to us had problems with little kids, and because of an incident involving scissors, Boo doesn't have any ears. He is super sweet despite that and will sing to you if you pet or hold him.
Out of the fiddlers: The male is named Fiddle and the female is named Sticks. Yes its a bad pun, but they are amusing to watch as long as you keep a lid on the fish take their in. They live in the water by will like to sunbath in the morning on their high rock.
Well, I think that is everyone.

What a super collection, Seeker! I loved the descriptions. Have you seen some of the guinea pig videos on youtube? When I need a smile, I tune one up:
Look at the clip in the brown one's hair!
Look at the long, beautiful coat on the brown and white one. I love that their cage is spotlessly clean. Lucky, well-cared-for guineas.
I love that his ears wiggle when he really squeaks!

Thank you. They are a very sweet bunch, all of them.
Mr. Chatterbox! XD
I have him in my Youtube favorites. He is very cute. My Mom spoils the guineas so much that whenever they hear her voice they start singing to get a treat! Which is adorable unless its three in the morning and they hear my Mom getting up because she is on call.

That's quite the gang you've got, Seeker!
I love their names; too cute! You know, they once made a movie about a crab whose owner forgot to keep the lid on the tank. They searched and searched, and looked everywhere for the escapee who had struck out on his own seeking high adventure. They finally found him on a lofty perch, singing and dancing his little crab heart out. The title of the film? "Fiddler on the Roof".
(eye-roll) Talk about bad puns....

Oh I agree Phalon! Ever since Fiddler on the Roof, and then Sebastian was such a big hit in The Little Mermaid, well, lot's of crabbies are trying their hand, er, pincher at singing. And there are so many good songs in Fiddler on the Roof too! If I were a rich crab, Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle fiddle yum. All day long I'd eat and eat and yum. If I were a wealthy crab. Wouldn't have hot pot. Ya ha deedle deedle, bubble bubble deedle deedle yum. If I were a biddy biddy rich, Yidle-faddle-didle-fiddle crab! Oh the memories! Watching him dance his little legs off, and then that tragic accident when he slid off the roof and fell in the pot of boiling water. You know, that's why they don't do stage shows in Red Lobsters any more. The audience wasn't very sympathetic to his plight. The police said it was the power of suggestion and he shouldn't have said "yum" so many times right before falling.

Well, fiddle dee dee, Stepper. <sniff and sob> I declare I need a tissue now. Such a sad ending for the little crustacean.
Tragic. And all he wanted was the chance to roam free and dance for a while. Born to be wiiiii-iii-iiild, looking for adventure, and whatever came his way. I don't think the little fiddler on the roof was a neotenate....maybe a cosmo-neopolitan, with his worldly, although striped, views.
Can you tell I learned a new word yesterday? Neotenate. I thought it was interesting. Dogs, for example, the animals who have been the longest domesticated are neotenates - have a sense of recognition is not species-specific. Along with their own canine companions, they'll play with cats, chickens, horses, humans, etc.
It's thought that because of this behavior, some species of wild animals became domesticated. It wasn't the will of man, but these animals decided to interact with humans, perhaps out of curiosity, begging for food, or following man as he nomadically moved from place to place. Eventually, they befriended one another, and moved in together, one species providing food and shelter, the other giving unconditional love and faithfulness.
It's an interesting theory.

Neoten..neot....dang. NEE-OH-TEN-ATE. I think I got it. Interesting word and theory. "Eventually, they befriended one another, and moved in together, one species providing food and shelter, the other giving unconditional love and faithfulness." Sounds like marriage in the days before The Pill, and before the average woman could be financially independent. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here's the very neat story of how an Oklahoma dog went from a pet shelter to Broadway. No kidding! www.adaeveningnews.com/local/local_story_018094845.html

Wow. Me like. I'd like to have something like this for my cat so he could go outside without getting into trouble. He's declawed, so this would protect him from critters he couldn't get away from or fight off. I'd have it attached to the house with a kitty door so he could come and go as he pleased. But I'd lock it when the weather was nasty so he wouldn't track crap back into the house.

Beautiful markings on your kitties, Ellie. Here's two of my reasons for not getting a new couch just yet (notice the permanent sag) - Dusty, aka The Hell Cat, aka Romeo Eyes, and Ranger, aka The Loveable Idiot, aka Bob. (The other two reasons walk on two legs: LX and BP, aka The Slobs) And here's the reason I don't get anything else new for the house: Marquetta, aka Batwing. Check out her ears - so soft, so playable, so ridiculously batwing-like. And they flap when she runs making them all the more batwingish.

Awwwww - thanks for the pics to go with the stories you've told us. What a bunch of characters! I found this link while looking for an "Itsy Bitsy Spider" link for the "Characters" thread. I've heard of miniature dogs and horses and pigs, but miniature donkeys? How cute! www.lildonk.com/

That photo of Madeline and Teaspoon is so cute, Siren. It reminds me of my boss and her insistence that donkeys make the best pets, although hers were always full-sized. Hhmmm....since the nursery is now petless, I wonder what would happen if someone would put a little idea into her head. A mini idea.
Wouldn't it be a sight to pull into a parking lot and be greeted by the Nursery Miniature Donkey?

I think he trying to attract the attention of a couple of feminine felines passing by. They briefly look his way, he gives the little wave seen halfway through the video, they turn their heads away and roll their eyes. Dejected, he gives up, and moves on to other catly pursuits.
Speaking of pets....I came home from work to find BP pet-sitting for the night.
"Where's BP", I asked LX when I walked in the door.
"She's in her room with the worms."
"Worms? What worms? Why's she got worms in her bedroom?"
LX shrugs. I look to Hubs for enlightenment. He shrugs....but gives an explanation. BP's friend (in another class at school) needed to bring worms to school....for Pet Day. Not having any pets of her own (except an unsociable dog whose manners are too unacceptable for the classroom), BP offered to supply her with pets to show on Pet Day. Worms were decided upon, and for whatever reason, it was agreed that BP would supply them.
The freeze warning last night dictated (by Hubs) that the worms, nestled in a Tupperware container (my Tupperware container, which Hubs punched worm breathing holes into) with plenty of the wormly delights they crave - decomposing leaves and rich soil - reside inside the house. She kept them in her bedroom so she could keep an eye on them. I vaguely wondered during the night if the holes Hubs made in my perfectly good Tupperware container were large enough to allow for worm escapisms.
Apparently not. All six worms this morning are accounted for (it was worm wake up time about a half hour ago, and a head count was taken), and they are dressed and ready to spend the day at school.
Time to go now. I hope they have fun.

"an unsociable dog whose manners are too unacceptable for the classroom" - LOL!! What a great story. And good for BP, stepping up to help a friend. Did you guys see this story on the net this week? You'd think it's photoshop fakery, but it it's not. We're talking GRANDE bunnies! today.msnbc.msn.com/id/36845356/ns/today-today_pets_and_animals/
