I am currently contemplating transferring the official Wildtangent website over to a Fan site. The biggest problem is financial. I have created a Poll on their website to see how much fan support there is for the transfer and laying out all the financial problems. It should be viewable by even visitors. My hope is that someone in here can help me get some kind of paying advertising set up so I can afford to maintain the site. Comments and constructive criticism welcome.

The only help I can offer is to share links to information for you to check out and see if it's something you might be interested in.
www.dailyblogtips.com/make-money-blogging/
www.problogger.net/
www.kickstarter.com/
This is all I could find at the moment. I have more info shared somewhere on making money with a blog. It should also work with a fansite. Some blogs & websites also have donate paypal buttons, you might want to consider that as well.

Actually, I was hoping for something a little closer to home. There is advertising on this site.
How is it implemented?
Who supplies the Ads?
How do you collect?

You'll have to ask the Proboards PTB that question. It is they who implement the ads you see. They make the money off of them. No one here makes money from them. I don't get any pay of any kind from Kym, Whoosh.org, or Proboards.
Lesa is on staff at Runboards. She helps the creator there with the coding and such. I'll ask her if she knows how it's done. Send her a link to this thread, and maybe she'll post her answers here. No promises. In the meantime I'll try and remember where I posted other info I came across about making money with blogging and websites.

Lesa said that with her blog she used:
Amazon:
and
Adsense:
She says she's made more money with the Paypal donation button, and even that wasn't much:
I've had no experience whatsoever with making money from the internet. I can only post links to sites that tell you how it can be done. And Lesa said the ProBlogger link I posted is a good site to check out:

That's alright. I've started the website but still haven't decided whether or not to get the same forum software as Wildtangent uses. If I do, it's going to be darned expensive. WildtangentFanSite

What's wrong with free message boards? They don't empty out your bank account. Plus, some have the option for members to pay to have the ads removed.
The three sites I've used for message boards are:
www.runboard.com/ proboards.com/
Proboards doesn't allow adult content, but the other two allow it, to a certain extent.

I'm used to phpBB forum software which is also free. My main concern is that the IP.Board content can be transferred to whatever I choose.
Adult content isn't a problem, as I plan on enforcing a G-Rating because most of the current members are so young ... and I find such things to usually be distasteful in any case.
Which of the above have options allowing for Ads to be removed?

All three will remove the ads, for a price.
At the bottom of Proboards forum, you will see:
Click here to remove banner ads from this forum.
At the top of the Yuku forum, you will see:
Contribute Now!
Runboard has two options:
1) Remove boards ads. -- This option is in the owner's board management control panel, click on "Purchase premium credits" www.runboard.com/support/premium_community
2) Each member can remove ads from all the boards they visit. -- This option is in the member's control panel, click on "Upgrade my account" www.runboard.com/support/user_premium_membership
www.runboard.com/support/
One of the pluses of having your board on Runboard is that Lesa is on staff there. She can fix any mistakes you make with the coding of the board. And she will answer all your questions at Runboard's Support board: bakheva.runboard.com/
wiki.runboard.com/wiki/Create_Your_Free_Runboard_Account
If you create a Proboards' forum, I can answer some questions about the admin section. Not so much when it comes to HTML & CSS.
I can also answer some questions with Yuku. Again, not so much with the HTML & CSS.
And I can answer some questions with Runboard & their member profile/control panel there. Newbies tend to get lost in their profiles/control panels, and can't seem to find their way out of there. I did at first as well, and then I opened a new window and went to the board I wanted to be at. So, you should tell newbies to have two windows open. One window with the board, and another window to register or log in. After registering or logging in, just refresh the window with the board. After a while, and with practice, it's easy to maneuver around.
Proboards has a shout box. The shout box can be for members only, or allow guest posting.
Runboard has one chatroom per board. The chatroom can be set up so that only board members can chat inside, or any logged-in member of Runboard can chat.
At Yuku, you can create more than one chatroom. There are 3 options: Public, Moderated, Private.

Are the Ads controlled by the software developers or by the forum owner?
At least with phpBB I know that there will be no Ads unless I put them there.

Since member's pay the company/developers/creators to get rid of the ads, I'd say they are in control.
I know that I, myself, have no control over the ads on any of the boards/forums I've created with Yuku, Proboards, & Runboard. I make no money from any of the ads on my boards/forums.

You can play around with each site to see which one you like best. They all let you delete the board when you're done. You can give them test names and use them to design the real board. That way if you make a mistake in the code you can fix it before moving the code from one board to another.
I don't know about Yuku, but Proboards lets you import and export themes. I do know that Runboard doesn't have that feature. You have to copy/paste everything over from one board to another.
Also, at:
Runboard -- it's a board with forums.
Yuku & Proboards -- it's a forum with boards.

Okay. I just logged in at Yuku and took a look in the 'skins' section. I saw the words, import & export. Lesa & Thor (Runboard creator) are working on the upgrade, not sure if import/export themes/skins will be a part of it or not.

Thanks for the information. I have a feeling that I won't be using any of them. I don't like the idea that someone else not only has control over advertising on my site but can collect money from my users just to turn off the Ads. Unless I finally decide to pay for IP.Board software, I will be using phpBB again.
At least with phpBB, I know how to Mod the software to make it do exactly what I want.

You're very welcome.
If I had the money to spend on a website and a board, I'd probably go with VBulletin.

Well, the website/forum seems to be limping along. There are four of us madly copying topics from the old forum over to the new one in the hopes that we can get everything important saved. We even have a Story Board set up because a couple of people were showing a literary bent before all this started and I wanted to give them a place to strut their stuff. I told one of them, Jalyha, about this forum and she indicated that she loved Xena but she is rather a shy person with a special needs child, so I don't know if she will join or not. If anyone in here wants to join, you will be welcome but probably bored to tears. I want to maintain a G-Rated community because so many of the members are so young. Unfortunately, you will have to join if you want to see everything that's available, as most of the fora are private for Full Members only. In fact, the registration process takes longer than normal because I have implemented a Spam Trap to help us keep trash out of the forum. If you are interested in what it looks like, you might register just so you can see for yourself. The website is Wildtangent Fansite and there is a button on the right to access the forum ... again, no pressure, only if you think you might be interested.
