Sorry Spock, but the Polgara book explained why her actions were a deception - her real underlying motivation was much less altruistic than mean and self-serving.

I do find a recurring phrase a bit annoying. Periodically she will comment on one of the other characters and then "say" something like, "Got you that time, didn't I, <character name>." Or she will say, "Did you want me to run through the <topic that would require a long, involved explanation>? No? I didn't think so." I have found those little asides totally irrelevant, annoying, and they detract from her persona. I think the book would have been much better without them. I can understand why you would feel the way you do but I think we should just agree to disagree on this particular subject. I like her and you don't. that's our individual opinions, and you know what I think of opinions.

I know this will sound like I'm a bit off, but I don't dislike the Polgara character so long as I ignore the follow on book that purports to be her view, so that's what I do. I ignore that last book and I'm happy with the rest of it. It's a lot of reading so I tend to stick to the Belgariad and the Mallorian. I count anything else as published storyline development for those who wish to read it, and I have no fear of recommending the main books to anyone. Especially the Belgariad.

Have you read The Riven Codex? It's not a "story" per se but the collected background material they used to create the books.

No - didn't see that one. I'll look it up.
Thanks!

If you use this feature, use only smileys you have uploaded to your own image site, or have permission to use. If you need help with adding images to your own image album, just ask. I and others here can also upload the images to our own albums for you.
NOTE: Hot linking without permission will get this forum reported for abuse. Don't do it!

I haven't added all of the smileys as of yet. I'll do a few at a time until I have them all listed. I won't remove the smileys from the 'Censored Words' list, so you can still use that code to post smileys too.

Anyone having problems with the quote button? It seems one of the "beta" plugins could be causing trouble with it.

If I use Chrome it works okay, but if I use IE the quote won't quote. I suspect I have an unsupported browser. I'm still running XP which means the most current broswer is 8. I'll try turning compatibility mode...
...nope - the odd thing is when I switch between on or off, the window flashes on the screen for a second and then that window disappears.

Sadly, Stepper, I've no doubt that MS will fix it so everyone is forced to upgrade at some point. My desktop is XP too. I don't think it can be upgraded either. I'm glad I got this laptop when I did. Although, if I had it to do over, I'd get another desktop.

I prefer a desktop too. I'm just more comfortable with a desktop. I don't know that one has an advantage over another - actually I have a laptop but it's got MS 8 as an operating system and I hate it, so it pollutes what I think about the laptop too.

Laptops are nice for when you have to take it somewhere, like the library, hospital, school, etc. And for working in short spurts. Desktops is best for long time periods. When I finally do need a new computer, I'll get a desktop, and a cheap tablet/PC with an attachable keypad. I can use the tablet/PC for on the go, and the desktop when I'm at home. Plus I'll use the tablet/PC for eReading too.

There is a definite advantage to a desktop computer, it's financial. If you look at two comparably configured computers; one a desktop and the other a notebook/laptop, you will find that the notebook/laptop costs roughly half again as much as the desktop. $1000 can buy quite a bit of computer as long as it's a desktop. The same power in a laptop would cost about $1500.

I wonder why? I'd think a desktop would be more.

The reason is because the notebook/laptop components are much smaller.

And, laptops require better cooling systems. They are thin so there is less space for the heat to dissipate. Copper is a good conductor but precious metals are better, especially for a computer. Faster, less susceptable to problems from heat, and gold offering less resistance than copper also generates less heat. So the laptop has better, and more expensive cooling systems, plus it carries a little more in way of precious metals. (They are also used for soldering or in combination with other base metals.) But I think Spock has pointed out the main reason - minituration costs. You're paying a lot more to get less.

The 'heat' factor alone is why I'll stick with a desktop from now on. A tablet with an attachable keypad would be for when I needed to take it with me for any reason.
