Hi again!
During the years I've noticed that Xena seems to be fond of gagging people, both with her bare hands and with actual gags. I recall this happening in many episodes in different situations, both when she's capturing "bad guys" or for example when she wants Joxer to shut up.
I've also seen Lucy Lawless put her hand over someones mouth in an interview about the series, so I started wondering if it's a trait Lucy added to her character? Or if it's something the writers thought suited Xena, or it just happened to suit the script scenarios quite often.
Have you noticed this? And do you remember any specific episodes where she shuts people up in different ways? Thanks to this forum I've got "Warrior... Princess... Tramp" as an example of this, where she clamps her hand over a guys mouth several times while listening to a nun's confession.

Welcome to the forum! In one of the more popular shows (A Day In The Life - S02E15) Xena tells Gabrielle that she doesn't like to do the same thing she's already done - she prefers doing something different. I personally don't remember over the entirety of the series that Xena was prone to a specific means of getting people to be quiet although putting her hand over someone's mouth would be a logical choice, but I recall that she used other methods in various shows. For instance, in Been There, Done That (S03E02) they keep experiencing the same day over and over except only Xena realizes what's happening. There's a scene where Joxer wakes them up by repeating "Rise and shine (people?) Rise and Shine!" By the forth or fifth time it's irritating so when it happens again, Xena uses her chakram and kills Joxer to shut him up (knowing that the day will repeat and he'll be back again the next morning.) Gabrielle's reaction makes the scene funny.

I never really noticed. Covering the mouth, or stuffing something in the mouth, is the universal way of shutting someone up. I don't think they put much thought into it, other than to not repeat themselves as much as possible.

To get her son to stop whining, complaining, and other annoying verbal things kids sometimes do, Xena Sis used to hold up her hand like a traffic cop signaling stop, and say 'Talk to the hand, cuz the face ain't listening.'
Hello, Elaine. Welcome to Whoosh.

Oh, yes. Forgot about the hand.

Actually, the 'gimmick' wasn't shutting people up. It was giving them 'the pinch' to make them talk.

Yeah. That too. That's a good one to add to the research. Did she keep them quiet more often than she made them talk?

I don't know! And I don't remember the shows well enough to guess. I'd have to watch the series again to find out. You know, I've seen ads for Xena on DVD both year by year and the entire thing. I have two or three copies on VHS tapes but I don't have a player rigged up.

Interresting answers! I can recall the following specific scenarios where she either gags someone or clamps her hand over their mouth, but I can't remember the episode names:
-She captures a guy who's in the woods, hunting for amazons, by jumping on him from a tree and putting him to sleep. When he wakes up Xena has bound and gagged him and she says something like "Now we'll know who's hunting amazones" and a girl who's with her (not Gabrielle) says something similar to "How can he tell us when you've gagged him?". - I remember another scene from a different episode where she captures anther man in the woods, gags him with a beige cloth over his mouth and takes him with her on a horseback. - She rescues Gabrielle from som sort of village she's kept in (maybe she's hypnotised? I don't remember) by coming up from behind and clamping her hand over Gabrielles mouth. - She shuts Gabrielle up this way in one episode when Gabrielle starts singing or something like that when they're in a field of grass. Don't remember what they're doing there. - I recall that in one episode where she is dressed as Cleopatra (?) in one scene you can se a guard (?) bound and gagged with a brown piece of cloth over his mouth under a table and it is implied that Xena did this to him. - She sneaks up from behind a guard, clamping her hand over his mouth and says something like "just nod for yes". - The episode I mentioned in my first post (Warrior... Princess... Tramp...) where she keeps a guy gagged with her hand to keep him from being heard by a nun on the other side of the wall. In this scene she funnily also gives him "the pinch" in betwean to make him talk, before firmly gagging him again and again.
Feel free to fill in the list with scenes where she uses these specific methods! Then maybe we can compare it to a list over scenes where she uses "the pinch"? That could be interresting, haha!
And thanks for the welcome!

They had an Anthony & Cleopatra show S05E18 - that's probably one of the shows you were talking about. Off the top of my head I can't place the rest of them.
That could be Fins, Femmes and Gems - I don't remember if Xena puts her hand over Gabrielle's mouth or just says her name.
Looked it up.
'G: “A scroll should be sung, not told.
[Sings] Well, listen to my story about Gabrielle-- A cute little gal that’s lookin’ really swell. Perfect hair, such a lovely lass-- Nice round breasts and a firm young-- ”
X: “Are you out of your mind?!”
G: “Too loud? Ar-are you worried we’re gonna get there and the fish’ll be gone?”
X: “I’m worried we’re gonna get there and the fish’ll be armed.”'

Pretty sure that's: Dangerous Prey.

Will have to get back to you on this one.
I'm thinking that may be: Ties That Bind.

No. Altared States.

Pretty sure this one is: A Day in the Life.

Fairly certain this could be: Antony and Cleopatra.

Okay. Have to get back to you on this one too.
Will have to get back to you on this one as well.
I have something I have to do, so don't have the time for those I will have to research.

Yo. Elaine! As you can tell, we pretty much spend most of our time in the Off Topics area, but to see what's happening you might want to click on the Recent Threads or Recent Posts. You're welcome to come on over if you wish. There's a lot to explore if you click back a few pages - or look into archived threads.
It's all up to you.

I think in can help a bit here "If the Shoe Fits", in my opinion Your description doesn't exactly match but I'm pretty sure you're talking about "Here she comes... Miss Amphipolis" I don't know this one but it seems good ! (maybe you're describing "A fistful of dinars" when she clamps her hand over a man's mouth but she doesn't say this to him)

I really should re-watch the series; I can't believe how many details, even though watching the episodes many times over, that I've forgotten.
Welcome to Whoosh, Kurtz. Just out of curiosity, are you a fan that's watched back from when the show first aired, or a recent fan?

There's also a scene at the end of the episode "Lyre, Lyre, Hearts of Fire" where Xena gags the villain. Phalon Recent fan (Lucy Lawless totally charmed me )

She does have that way about her, doesn't she.
So Kurtz...because I like to pronounce things right in my head, are you Kurtz pronounced as if there were multiples of you (as in Kurts), or Kurt Z? A curtsey Kurtz, pleased to meet you.
