It’s a good thing when stories keep their hold on you. I never ever want my favorite stories to let go of me, or me of them. And if more people understood this, most books to film would stay true to the source.
Rereading this novel series makes me wish that the TV show had understood that. And understand how it got canceled because it veered too far off from the story and characters that the fans love dearly. What they created was not the books. They created fanfiction. There is good fanfiction out there, but if you buy a product expecting it to be the original, and all you get is a knockoff, you’re going to toss that product against the wall. They should have changed the name of the show. They should have changed the names of the characters. They should have let it be known that we weren’t getting the original product. They should have stated the show was inspired by the book series. They should have alerted us that they were creating fanfiction. I liked the look of the show, and I think I would have stuck with the show, if I wasn’t so heartbroken that I wasn’t getting what I was expecting, craving . . . to see the novels become flesh and blood and real.
The writers and creators staked me in the heart like I was a strigoi. They killed my soul and the souls of every fan. How could they do that to us and think we would support them in return? That we wouldn’t retaliate and turn on them. You don’t crap on the fandom if you want the masses to support you. That show could still be in production. The writers and creators shot themselves right between their own eyes. How did they not see that coming? The creators swore that they themselves were fans of the novel series. I beg to differ. A true fan wouldn’t have veered far from the stories and characters. A true fan wants to see their favorite story come to life, not be turned into a fanfic knockoff.
Yeah. I’m still bitter. All I have is the movie. It’s closer to the original . . . close enough that I can enjoy it. I was hoping the show would be even closer. Betrayal’s a b1tch. Those creators are dangling from a thread. They’ll have to earn my trust before I’ll put any faith in them again. Actually, one creator was already dangling from a thread. I’d already been disappointed in the work she put out. So, I shouldn’t have put all my hopes into her putting out any content I’d appreciate. Live and learn.
