Medium Seeks More Arquettes
Glenn Gordon Caron, creator of NBC's hit supernatural series Medium, told SCI FI Wire that he hopes to enlist star Patricia Arquette's actor brother David to helm an upcoming episode; David recently directed his first feature film, the independent horror movie The Tripper. "A guy who actually made a very interesting horror film that's coming out later this year is David Arquette," Caron said in an interview during a break in filming on the show's Manhattan Beach, Calif., set on Nov. 7. "So it wouldn't suprise me if we didn't seduce him into directing an episode."
Caron also said he hoped to persuade fellow executive producer Kelsey Grammer to helm an episode, if not to reprise his chilling guest role from last season's "Death Takes a Policy" episode as the Angel of Death. "Boy, I hope so," Caron said. "I hope so. That's a tough get. Because Kelsey's a busy guy. He's got movies, and he's got plays, and he's got all kinds of things that he's doing. So making the stars line up right to be able to bring him back is always a unique challenge. I'd like to bring him back. Additionally, we'd like him to come and direct one."
Caron also said to expect the return of many familiar guest stars this season, including Mark Sheppard as the evil Dr. Charles Walker in the season's third episode, "Blood Relation"; Arliss Howard, as Texas Ranger Capt. Kenneth Push, in the season's 11th episode; and Kathy Baker as the mother of Joe Dubois (Jake Weber).
The season kicks off Nov. 15 with a special two-hour episode that will feature a guest appearance by Thomas Jane, the real-life husband of Patricia Arquette. The episode also marks some formal experimentation: Dream sequences by one of the Dubois children, Bridgette (Maria Lark), will be rendered in 2-D animation. On Nov. 7, SCI FI Wire previewed the episode's elaborate teaser sequence, which features not one, but four separate dream sequences by four separate characters, including a taste of animation and a glimpse of Jane's character, Clay Bicks, an old lover of Allison Dubois (Patricia Arquette).
"I think we have an extraordinarily exciting third season," Caron said. "And we're really only about halfway done planning it, but, I'm sure you've heard from everybody, this two-hour premiere does things that, I think, had you said to me four months ago that we're going to do this, I would have said 'What?' And that's followed by a fabulous episode that we did called 'Be Kind, Rewind.' And that's followed by the reprise of Dr. Walker. ... If I tell you we're wrapping it up, then you'll know the answer."
If David Arquette agrees to do an episode, he wouldn't be the first member of Patricia Arquette's extended showbiz family to take part in the show. In addition to Jane, Patricia's brother Richmond Arquette previously guest-starred.
Medium's third-season premiere airs Nov. 15 at 9 p.m. ET/PT; the show assumes its new timeslot, Wednesdays at 10 p.m., the following week
