This one seems pretty plausible, and it might interest you Jox, your making references to old movies got me thinking, what if they're basing the show on some classic movie or novel, and they're just giving it a different twist, like making it a sci-fi version, or changing a major aspect of it, for instance, writing Lord Of The Flies with adult characters so that we don't recognize it right away. This has been done quite a bit recently, like with the movie about Jeckyl and Hyde starring Julia Roberts, I can't remember the name of it. They wrote it from a different characters perspective, so even though it's the same story, it's quite a bit different from the original.
Not that it was unrecognizable, but what if the producers of Lost got the idea from movies like that and decided to take the concept one step farther, and make the story unrecognizable initially, and then give the audience clues over time, as to what story it's based on, and if we can figure out what book or movie it's based on, then we can figure out the mystery of the island. That would be a really interesting ploy for them to use to pull one over on us, when everyone finds out the answer, they'll be going "oh, of course, I should have realized that" and I can see ABC doing that, because they would have the bragging rights for being able to write a very well known story in such a creative way that nobody recognized it.
