The French woman said it was a security system, so that leaves out the theory of Walt conjuring it up. If it was his doing, she never would have seen it before and not have any idea of what it was. There was a black mist, so that means it isn't a machine. Other than it not being any of the above, I've not yet decided on what it could be.  I think 'the others' are past survivors, and that they have no control over the island... but not quite sure why they want Walt. How would they know of his special powers?  Have they come across information that gives accurate predictions of the future, and it tells of a boy with a gift that can get them off the island?

I would say that 'the others' never got past the security system, otherwise wouldn't they have gotten the dynamite already?  I don't think they know any more about the island than anyone else. I could change my mind on that when season two comes out and we get more info.
