Evangeline Lilly Is Happily 'Lost'
October 20, 2005
It's been a stellar year for ABC's hit series "Lost," which won an Emmy® for Outstanding Drama, and continues to climb in the ratings. ET caught up with series star EVANGELINE LILLY to get her take on being part of the "Lost" whirlwind.
ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT: How has your life changed since getting the role of Kate?
EVANGELINE LILLY: It is my first role ever. My life is far from the same. There is nothing the same about it. It is absolutely changed. How hasn't it changed? A year ago, I was going to university in Vancouver. A year ago, I was paying tuition by doing extra work. A year ago, I had no intentions of being in the acting world. Now I am going to the Golden Globes® and the Emmys® and walking the red carpets in Monte Carlo. It is a very different world.
ET: If you don't watch TV or go to movies, why did you want to become an actress?
EVANGELINE: It was something I stumbled into. It happened a bit on a whim and it happened very quickly. I went on my first audition in January 2004, and was in Hawaii by March 2004, so it wasn't something I necessarily pined after for years.
ET: So, are you into all the glam stuff?
EVANGELINE: Not at all. I love being in denims and having my hair be bed head and I love hardly wearing any makeup. It is easy. I often pity the "Desperate Housewives," because I think, "You have to glam up every day on set and then you have to for [awards ceremonies.] I get to wear my denims on set and come to these events glammed up." It is more fun.
ET: Your character has a criminal past. Were you familiar with guns?
EVANGELINE: I was supposed to take training, but then with the scheduling of the show, there wasn't time for it. So it was sort of on-site training. So when I had to do that gun slinging scene in the bank, I had two stuntmen working with me and coaching me along as I did it. But it is something that I take to really well. I love doing stunts, I love being aggressive and I love do something that is a little more macho, so it was a lot of fun.
ET: The camera is kind to you.
EVANGELINE: I think I can give all that credit to my parents. My parents are extremely beautiful and they are very expressive and friendly. My older sister has two kids,. They are very expressive with their faces. They are always very animated because our family is very animated.
ET: Do they watch "Lost"?
EVANGELINE: They actually hardly get the chance to watch me. My sisters are very busy and they don't get the chance to. The older one has two children and the younger one is a university student who works fulltime.
ET: Has your family been to see you yet in Hawaii?
EVANGELINE: They have. I think it was a good eye opener for my parents to see me in my own world as an adult. As typical parents, they still think of me as a little girl, and they still think of me as somebody who needs mummy and daddy to hold her by the hand and take her through life. To see me in my environment, doing my own thing and succeeding at it was really great for us all.
ET: Do you have to watch your diet?
EVANGELINE: No. I really believe when it comes to diet, you have to listen to your body. If your body is craving carbs, there is reason you need that. But I also believe in the philosophy of eat less, move more.
