Aww Eirene, sorry to hear that (especially about the refrigerator - I can just about cope without TV for a few weeks, but no food doesn't sound so do-able) You sound like you need a 'treat yourself' night... warm bath, lots of chocolate, your favourite book/movie, takeaway food. Mmmm, stomach rumbling at the thought! Catcob

Morning all. Just baked some lemon and raspberry muffins - anyone want one? (don't say it too loudly, but I found a beetle creature in the flour just as I had put them in the oven...they're for my boyfriend's friends who are coming to dinner tonight. Moral dilemma. Should I chuck them out - no time to make new ones, because out all day - or should I just feign ignorance?)

Hi y'all... Welcome Guru, nice to have you. Just to clarify, before everyone thinks I'm some kind of millionaire living in an English mansion, the glass-surrounded swimming pool is not at my house Sorry to disappoint you Gig! Its my local public pool...I wish it was in my back yard, then I wouldn't have to get up so darn early to swim before work! and I would certainly be inviting everyone over for a pool party! How is everyone today? It was my day off yesterday, which was great. I was out on Wednesday night after our pantomime launch party and have a few too many alcoholic beverages... ...oops! So spent the first half of the day recovering and watching some Xena, always makes me feel a bit more human! Then it was such a beautiful day that I took my book and went to the Botanical Gardens, (as we have no back garden of our own and the gardens are just across the street). They have lots of glasshouses - tropical, arid, temperate, alpine - where you can see plants from all over the world. The tropical house is my favourite. They recently had a really big event, they have a flower called a Titan Arum (I think!) and it hardly ever flowers. Its flower is approx. 2m high and blooms for 8hours (at its best) and then for 2 days in decline before it dies. It also smells of rotting flesh and is called the 'corpse plant'. Its fascinating and huge! Phalon, am I right in thinking you are a plant person? If so you should have seen it! The weather has definitely turned now, its been damp and breezy today, the summer is over I think. dixie

*grabs a chair at usual table* Think I'll have something sweet and fruity tonight. Any recommendations?
Summer? Over? Around here I think fall has taken a vacation. The high today was 104. Blah........... Someone remind me again why I live here? At least I'm not in the path of the hurricanes(s). Speaking of which has everyone checked in? Kiwi, Tami, Xie, am I forgetting anyone? Hope all is well for anyone out there tonight. And same for those who are not.

Oh well, it's still nice for a public pool. It's funny, I don't know much about plants, but I've read about the Titan Arum. I remembered it when you said how it smells of rotting flesh. I don't remember how I came across it though. Anyway, here's a link for anyone who's interested in reading about this huge flower that gives off such an awful smell. I sure hope they gave it its own little greenhouse, where people can look at it without actually entering.

The corpse flower...of corpse. We used to have a gardening thread over at the old Whoosh board, and briefly discussed it there.
Here, let me reminisce...
Gabbin Registered Member Posts: 442 (6/12/03 12:12 pm)
Ah, the garden of Xena, I think I will just sit on this tree stump in front of the fire and take out my shears to sharpen. It is nice after a day of taming warlords to have a nice relaxing place such as this. I wonder where my trusty sidekick, Gabrielle (Genus Gabrielles kick bardbuttes) is. Ah well...
So, what a coincidence as I was reading a cute little article on the erotic exotic plant Amorpholphallus titanum......has the subspecies laughter subsided? Wow, does that embedded name mean love changing phallus of titanium? Common, and less braggerly name, Corpse flower. Hmm, is there a corspelation there...phallus, corpse. Of corpse not, well, depends, I suppose. It bloomed at the Botanical conservatory in Cal for the first time since planting in 1995. Native to Indonesia it emits a rotting-flesh odor attracting flies. Yuck. When the flower is about to bloom does the fly say here comes the corpse? The flower photo shows a Mom with a scrunched up nose which is perfect. phalon1 Registered Member Posts: 1233 (6/13/03 4:38 pm) I’ve heard of that stinkin’ flower, Gabbin, but have never seen, (or smelled) one. I read once, that the scent is to attract the flies in order for pollination. Today, I looked it up in a reference book at work. EGADS! Ugly. Yes, I can see the botanical name connection now. Wild looking, like something from the Little Shop of Horrors. The reference book describes the scent as a “slighty offensive odor”. And a rotting corpse is only slightly offensive?
Another hellish smelly flower is the Fritilaria. Some liken the scent to cat urine, I think vomit. A bulb that flowers in the spring, it is much prettier than the rotting Corpse. Big stalks and multiple flowers hanging down, umbrella style, or some varieties pointing skyward. Customers come into the nursery in the spring asking, “What is that pretty yellow flower in one of the gardens.” After telling them, I issue a warning not to plant it next to the front door. A customer once did this, and got sick to her stomach everytime she entered her house. This, of course, happens to me, not from any flower, but from the mess that awaits me upon opening the door. The mad dash to leave in the morning, usually means a trail of stuff left in the wake. So the bulb, which we sell in the autumn, stinks up the entire store. Yuck. On the label it says the plant is deer resistant. No wonder. So self-respecting animal would eat this, or at least not let anyone know if they did. Kind of like taking a big spoonful of the kids’ Spaghettios when no one is looking.
Welcome to all these new patrons here. Glad you found the place.
Catcob, I'd feign ignorance. I find that always works best.
Hiya Scrappy. What Barbara song is on tap for tonight?

How about..........
How do you tell your child in the night nothing's all black But then nothing's all white How do you say it will all be alright when you know that it mightn't be true What do you do?
Careful the things you say, Children will listen Careful the things you do Children will see And learn Children may not obey But children will listen Children will look to you for which way to turn To learn what ot be Careful before you say, "Listen to me" Children will listen
Careful the wish you make Wishes are children Careful the path they take Wishes come true Not free Careful the spell you cast, Not just on children Sometimes the spell may last Past what you can see And turn against you Careful the tale you tell That is the spell Children will listen
How can you say to a child who's in flight "Don't slip away and I won't hold so tight"? What can you say that, no matter how slight Won't be misunderstood? What do you leave to your child when you're dead? Only whatever you put in it's head Things that your mother and father have said Which were left to them too
Careful what you say Children will listen Careful you do it too Children will see And learn Guide them and step away Children will glisten Tamper with what is true And children will turn, If just to be free Careful before you say "Listen to me" Children will listen Children will listen....
From Into the Woods.my favorite musical!

I've never heard that one, but wow...powerful words. I think I'll have to print this out and stick it on the refridgerator. Glance at it every now and again when Little Xena and Baby Phalon are irritating each other on purpose with the sole intent on irritating me. Make me think before losing my cool.

We just got our bulbs in for fall planting, and dang, if the store doesn't stink to high heaven.

Hi everyone Once again I'm spending a perfectly good sunny day in the dark...ah, I love theatre! On the flip side my boss just had to rearrange the rota for next week, which now means I get 2 days off in a row (Sunday and Monday), unfortunately I'm too poor to do anything exciting And it means I then won't have a day off for about 10 days.. Hope everyone's having a good day, glad my smelly flower piece generated some interest! In answer to xengab - I think people remember me the most for two things...firstly I have a very unusual name and once people grasp it they don't usually forget it. This is a good thing in theatre because getting a job can depend on people remembering who you are! On the other had people get it wrong all the time, which chaps my ass! Secondly, I've got a very dry sense of humour, which folks comment on a lot. I'll take a Jack and Pepsi...to keep Scrappy happy! dixie

Good choice. May I join you? It's my day off too. Think I'm finally going to take mom to that movie I promised. Maybe we'll just rent some and stay home. More movie for your buck that way. And no annoying people to screw up the experiance. Have a good day all!

Scrappy, the quote is kind of a reminder to myself. I have a tendency to speak, (or write), before I think, (I'm not necessarily talking about with my kids). This lack of thinking usually results in putting my foot in my mouth, (talk about things stinky!). Usually followed by a main course of crow....I've eaten quite a lot of it in my day. Never grown fond of the taste though.
One of my most memorable characteristics?
See first paragraph.

I'm in good company then. I'm known for being blunt and honest. It often gets me into trouble. Especially with people who have "authority" over me. I have learned however that I must always accept the consequences of my words and to never be afraid that I might be proven wrong. No one can possibly be right all the time. The only thing you can do is, have the courage of your convictions but know you are not infallible. I believe this is especially true when you are dealing with children.
I had a great day with my mom. We rented movies, had ice cream and laughed a lot. Almost time for bed. I’d like to have a drink first. Anyone want to join me?

Sounds like an enjoyable day with your Mom, Scrappy. Mine lives too far away for an afternoon like that. I talked to her on the phone today, (our weekly conversation), or, at least tried to. Geesh, my family finds the oddest things to do whenever I'm trying to talk on the home. This time Hubs and Little Xena, (the nine year old), were singing the weather report while watching the Weather Channel. <shakes head> It's a wonder I am as sane as I am. And that's not saying much.
I wish I was out-spoken. I'm not. Actually, I'm quite shy, except at times WHAM! Something gets my goat and then the sarcasm is let loose. Gets me in a heap of trouble sometimes. I guess I'm somewhere between Scrappy in her bluntness and Xengab, trying to please everyone. That pleasing everyone thing also gets me into trouble. I've found myself being volunteered for stuff I would have never had an inclination to do otherwise, (read sucker here). All in all, I guess it's a pretty happy medium though. Lends itself to some memorable stories, anyway.
So Eirene...tomorrow is refrigerator day. May your food be cold once again.
