Oh, and btw, Stepper, I love your Halloween avatar! PS: Thanks. I was going to leave the other one, but "somebody" changed her's to a more seasonably appropriate avatar and not wanting to be so easily out classed, I switched mine too. But I went for one that suits me better of couse.

Doesn't the screaming, teenager spillage occur in the home as well? I take it you don't live with one?
As the boo-ee and not the boo-er, I can't relate to the fun of screaming BOO....I'm usually just screaming. OMG, Hubs gets me with this so many times it's become a family joke. It never fails...even when I know it's coming, I can't help myself from letting out a bloodcurdling scream.
I prefer to hand out Snickers, Reese's Peanut-butter Cups and the like...oh, and Twix too. You know...just in case there are any left-overs. I love Twix candy bars.
The Headless Horseman, or The Tell Tale Heart?l

Moi? Psst....Stepper....that's not a seasonal avatar....I got my hair cut a few weeks ago, and I haven't been able to do a thing with it since. Oh, and I think I'm due for a manicure.
Scrappy started it, you know, with that bloody hand of hers. And have you seen Joxie lately? That's some scary flashing she's got going on.

Nope! Didn't make any mistakes. Okay, neither of us was interested and agreed to no offspring before we were married. I recognized a long time ago that I wasn't daddy materiel and elected to keep from inflicting myself on children. Avatar? I thought that was a portrait! Now I don't want to know better - I'd be disappointed.
And yes, Scrappy's got a really cool flashy thing happening. That takes inspiriation or frustration levels that can only come from having a teenager and I have neither.
The Headless Horseman. It's been a favorite for years.
Stretch out the candy or pig out while you can?

Ah, but don't forget the sweet nothings whispered into your ears....and with all those creatures stirring around in that long hair, you'd have a whole chorus of them.
When I was a kid, my Halloween candy would last until after Christmas....but usually all that was left after the first couple of weeks was the icky stuff.
My biggest problem now, is waiting until Halloween start in on the candy. Shhhhh.....I broke into the Snicker's bars last night.
Who's the creepiest? The Adams Family or the Munsters?

Post by stepper on Oct 30, 2009 21:38:30 GMT -6
I think the Addams Family was creepier. How many homes have a disembodied walking hand which has no eyes, mouth, digestive sysem, and runs around in the duct work?
I know what you mean about the candy. I bought a bag of Tootsie Roll Mini's, but spouse got into it when I brought it home a couple weeks ago. We tend to have a couple hundred kids a year minimum, so I had to go buy another bag. Spouse REALLY likes Tootsie Rolls.
Carve a scary or friendly pumpkin?

Post by Phalon on Oct 31, 2009 6:33:36 GMT -6
Usually scary. Or at least, one with a grin that can be interpreted either way...because you never really know what a pumpkin's thinking, do you? Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha
Clowns. Loads of fun, or something else....something sinister?

Clowns are evil bastards to be stamped out whenever possible.
Halloween candy...chocolate all the way or a mix of hard candy?

Clowns are great fun, even when they're scary. And chocolate. Definitely chocolate.
Plain chocolate or chocolate something? Chocolate fudge, chocolate covered nuts, chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered whatever.

Thanksgiving: Turkey or something else?

Always turkey - I wouldn't want it any other way.
Leaf removal: a leaf-blowers or a rake?
|
|
|
Post by stepper on Nov 13, 2009 23:34:16 GMT -6
Leaf Blower. If it needs more, then in the spring I put a thatching blade on the mower.
Burn the leaves or let the trash truck suck 'em up?
|
|
|
Post by Phalon on Nov 18, 2009 5:32:39 GMT -6
Hhmmmm...I'm kind of torn here. I love sitting around a bonfire - especially in the fall; we had one this past weekend. Burning leaves though, strictly as a way of removal, I disagree with. I'd rather put them in the garden, compost pile, and when those are full and can't take anymore, I rake them to the street for the leaf-sucker truck. Biogradable bags are okay too - never plastic.
What I have a problem with is people who preach environmentalism, by making the claim they are reducing their "carbon footprint" by burning their yard waste and even trash instead of sending it to the landfills. Yes, it keeps it out of the landfills, (although leaves and yard waste in biogradable bags is a whole lot better than trash in plastic bags), but the dioxins released into the air from burning are just as bad, if not worse. It's a fact: 2 to 40 houses with burn barrels produce as much dioxin as a 200 ton per day municipal incinerator.
Most surely not the simple answer you were looking for, Stepper - sorry about that.
Here's an easy one for those chilly days - hats, earmuffs, or brave the cold without either.

If it's calm, brave it. But if the wind is blowing, I need something to protect my ears - especially if it's cold. I prefer a hoodie, but since that wasn't a choice, I'll go for the hat. Partly because I don't know anyone who actually wears earmuffs, but when I was young I tried that a couple of times and for the most part, they didn't work all that well except for making me look like a full fledged dork.

Everybody in the family! Even if it's not a "significant" gift it says "I thought of you." While some of the kids were little I'd get them one of the large Hershey's candy bars, and I included a McDonalds gift card with it. Now, even though they are older, they look forward to eating that candy bar Christmas Day - and McD's is never a bad choice. It's become a tradition. Seems candy is always welcome.
Send cards to everyone, or just relatives.

just relatives. 'course, that's me, and i have so many friends that i'd go broke trying to send them all cards!
(i think that i'm supposed to ask a this or that question now, cuz i've never done this game before. hope i'm playing it right. here goes.)
turkey for thanksgiving, or ham?

Post by Phalon on Nov 24, 2009 5:07:32 GMT -6
You look like a dork, Stepper? Never.
I have the sinus thing too, Joxie...although, most times I go hatless. It's not the dork-factor I'm worried about, though. It's my hair - hats muss up my hair (eye-roll). Actually, I've got so much of it, hats or headbands won't stay on for long. I found these cool ear-muffs though a couple of years ago. Remember those "slap-it" bracelets? It's kinda the same principle - only the band is wide, and covered in the softest ever fleece.
Now, only if I could find them; I think they ended up on some kid's head while sledding down the ravine, and never made it back to me. Grrrrr.
Avoid Black Friday at all costs.
Us kids, (the adult ones), draw names. The twenty and under crowd get gifts from everyone.
ACK! You're supposed to send cards at Christmas?! I admit failure in this for the last couple of years. I send a few out, and then as they trickle in this way, I send one in return.
I'm pretty sure we covered this one, but since I never get tired of turkey, I'll say again - it's gotta be turkey!
Thanksgiving at home, or travelling to family?

At home.
Drag out the Christmas decorations starting on Turkey Day or wait until sometime later?
|

|
Post by stepper on Nov 28, 2009 16:11:42 GMT -6
I just gotta have turkey for Thanksgiving, but for Christmas I usually do ham because of the lack of time. Ham is easier and faster, and Christmas is already busy enough that I don't want to mess with all the extra cooking and cleaning too. (Yes I do the cooking for Thanksgiving and Christmas.) And I prefer having Thanksgiving at home, but sis-in-law invited us to her place and this year we accepted. It was a nice day and it was great to be with family no matter how long the drive was, but while we were there we found out that her hubby was finally offered a job - near Chattanooga - and they aren't planning on coming back except to pack up the rest of their stuff after the house sells. And, they left today. Decorations - I guess I start "after" because Thanksgiving is given over to cooking, eating, cleaning up, and any distraction that doesn't look like work for the rest of the day.
Speaking of decorations...outside lighting or why bother?

Post by EllieNeo on Dec 2, 2009 14:12:32 GMT -6
why bother? they're always tangled and it takes like 2 hours to untangle them, and then there's always one that's burnt out, and you have to find it or none of them work. maybe if you got like, those net light things, you could just throw over bushes. but otherwise... really... why bother...? hm. wrap gifts or put them in gift bags?

Color-schemed decorations or multi-colored?
|
|
|
Post by Phalon on Dec 4, 2009 21:55:38 GMT -6
Multi-colored...as long as the lights are white, and the decorations not gaudy. Cookies or cakes? ...and regardless of your answer, Stepper, this one's for you.

Gift Wrapped Tags Multicolors Cookies ...and regardless of your answer, Stepper, this one's for you. Oh joy! I know it's contrary to the intent, but I happen to like these things. Not all of them, but some of the better made ones are pretty good. Real tree or Fake Tree

I don't really like cutting down trees and then just trashing them after Christmas...so I'll say my little fiber optic three-footer that Mare bought for me about three years ago. Or the potted ones that you can plant; those are cool, too!
Ever done the traditional Christmas caroling or not?
