Proboards has been having a problem with ads of late. Members seem to be getting viruses from them. They disabled the ads for a while, but now have them back up. If you're having a problem with viruses when you come here, you need to create an account at the Support Forum and complain in this thread.
Sorry. There's nothing I can do about it. The only way to get rid of ads is to pay Proboards to make this forum ad-free. I'm not sure if this makes the forum ad-free for all members, or just the ones forking out the money. I'm guessing it's all members, as there's an option where I can allow guests to view the forum ad-free, or have them see ads and only members are allowed ad-free.
I admin for free. I don't get any of the money going to proboards, so it makes me no nevermind if you choose not to pay to remove the ads. Only do so if they are bothering you and you'd like to be rid of them. No hurt feelings on my part, I assure you.

OOOh, is that what killed Scrappy's computer... Ellie was complaining about problems with her comp awhile back. Dunno if this had anything to do with it though.

I know I've had problems with pages loading for a few weeks now. I had no problems when the ads were disabled, but am again now that they're back up. If I've gotten viruses, my firewall & anti-virus haven't given me any warnings. I'd hate to think some were getting by them.
It wouldn't hurt for members to add the Support forum to their favorites. You can lurk & scan their threads to see if there are similar complaints to what you've been experiencing, and find answers. A lot of times I don't even have to make a post myself.

having a heck of a time finding that thread... probably just dunno where to look. anyway i dunno where it came from, but there was some trojan horse thing that screwed up my harddrive. had to take it to geek squad and they had to install a new harddrive. this killed off all my sims, which, of course, slightly upset me. also i had to install something called a "proxy" which i have no idea what that is cuz i'm not a computer tech. he said it's something to do with my ip address but i dunno what cuz it was all technobabble. have they fixed the problem...? i don't want to have to pay another $200 for another new harddrive if i get another trojan horse.

I've mentioned having problems before, but the sequence of events included going to photobucket and uploading a picture first. Here, I've noticed that when I run into problems, it usually involved my Adobe. The advantage of having an older and slower system - things don't flash by or download quickly. I've caught a couple of surreptitious downloads but stopped the damage but having my firewall stop all IT traffic. Since the downloads seemed to be exploiting Adobe I went looking and found this. It may or may not be involved in the problems that others are experiencing, but it's something to consider.
"Adobe itself has so far only observed specific attacks against Reader and, until a patch is available, recommends that users of Reader for Windows either delete authplay.dll, rename it, or make it inaccessible. This file is normally located at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\authplay.dll. Adobe does note though that as a result of moving or deleting authplay.dll "users will experience a non-exploitable crash or error message when opening a PDF that contains SWF content". Instructions for other platforms were not issued by Adobe."

Okay. That thread was several pages long when I added it to my first post above. It seems that since they believe they have the problem solved, they've deleted all but the one post. Anyhoo ... if you have problems with any of the ads, that's the thread to post in.

I see the ads have been disabled again. But the thread hasn't been added to. I did find a thread on the board that might have to do with ads though, but they're waiting for follow-up, so no news yet as to what's going on.

I have Adblock Plus, and got rid of the ads that were slowing down my computer, and the forum is loading so fast now I think I'm in heaven. I hope it lasts a long time.

The board has been loading extreeeemly slow for me, starting last night. I gave up then because it was so slow. It seems to be no better this morning. It loads quick if I turn off my phishing filter, but don't want to do that just in case.

I'm not sure if this is the thread to post this but if any of you see an icon appear on your desktop titled: Internet Security 2010 -- KILL IT! Its a malware program that takes control of desktop and starts downloading Trojans onto your machine. It took me a few hours to figure out where the thing was hiding and how to remove it from my system.

Phalon: I use Adblock Plus and now have no ads whatsoever. I just did a search, and it seems it only works on Firefox. I haven't used IE in ages. I really hated making the switch, but now I wouldn't go back. Not that I don't use IE from time to time for certain sites, but Firefox is now my default browser. I have shortcuts to IE and Safari on my desktop though, so I can open them quickly whenever I feel the need to use them.
May I suggest you download Firefox, but don't make it your default browser. Just put a shortcut on your desktop, and open one for here and any other Proboards forums you may visit ... then use IE for all other sites. That's kind of how I started out. I'd use Firefox for certain sites, and IE for all others. Sometimes I have all 3 open. I'm such a geek.
Seeker: Thanks for the heads up. I created a thread on the Internet Security board, you can add to it whatever info you come across on this malware.

BTW: Watch the status bar at the bottom of your window. (Enable if disabled.) You can usually tell what is hanging up and slowing down your page loading. If you have Adblock Plus, seek out that url and add it to the block list. Or you can add it to your anti-virus, firewall & browser block lists. A lot of times I have time to write down the url to do a search on it or to have to add to my block lists.

Anything with these problem advertisements that's screwing up the sound on peoples' computers? Cuz the sound on Ellie's computer has stopped working and she doesn't know why, and I can't figure it out either.

When mine does that I reboot. Sometimes closing all windows and programs will fix it so that I don't have to reboot.

Have you wiggled the wires? Made sure they're plugged in? Made sure your sound system is plugged in and turned on? (If you have one.) Hit the mute button to see if it was accidentally turned on? Checked the software to see if it had been accidentally disabled?
I'm out of ideas.

No idea on a laptop. I have a sub-woofer setup on my computer that has software with it. I click on the avatar on my toolbar.

Do you have sound at all? Plug in ear phones - do you get good sound that way? Right click on the sound icon on the bottom right and open the sound controls. You'll find 6 or 7 different sound controls beside the master control mute. It's possible to individually mute the different categories, or to turn down the individual controls to a level which make them inaudible. For example, you could have accidentally turned off wave or digital or midi (etc) without affecting any other settings. Are the speakers on a separate power source, and if so, have you checked for fuses or breakers? Do the speakers have battery backup? If so, check them for dead batteries (even if on an a/c source) - or batteries that are showing signs of corrosion. After that, I'd start being concerned about the sound card itself.

this is my laptop, step... so just the built-in speakers. headphones don't help... nothing is muted.... maybe it is the hardware, rather than the software. *rolls eyes* looks like another $50 i'll have to spend. *grumbles*

From this thread I see that, yes, they are having troubles again. Go to the last page to get the latest. You'll need to register there if you want to post your complaints.

Proboards makes money with those ads, so they had better find out what is causing this hiccup and quick. And in the meantime, either use Firefox & Adblock Plus, or pay for ad-free. Sorry, those are the only things I can suggest, as I have no control over the ads or the viruses. To make your disgruntlement known, you can join the support forum and complain there.

Good to know. You can also add those links, and others to your anti-virus, firewall, and browser block lists. Adblock works best, but doing that does help with other browsers that aren't able to get Adblock Plus.
