Metal vocalist, Ronnie James Dio died this morning at age 67, less than a year after he announced he was battling stomach cancer. "Dio" is practically a household name in the world of metal. His unmistakable vocals led him to fame in the mid-seventies in Rainbow, and further propelled him after taking Ozzy Osborne's place in Black Sabbath when Osborne left the band. Sabbath's first album, "Heaven and Hell", with Dio as the lead singer is arguably the band's best album and one of the most memorable in metal history. Even now, the debate about whether Black Sabbath is defined by Ozzy or by Dio continues. In between stints with Black Sabbath, Dio also had a successful solo career. I had not heard of Dio's death, Phalon. While I was bopping to the likes of Cyndi Lauper and the Go Go's, many of the kids in school were worshipping Dio. I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

Thanks for fixing the link, Joxie; I couldn't figure out why it posted red/black.
I was bopping to Cyndi Lauper too, Lola...heck, I think I wanted to be Cyndi Lauper, cuz basically, girls just wanna have fun. My musical tastes were all over the board back then - mostly classic rock - it was my Sixties Rock Phase - to newer rock twinged with bouts of pop music, and metal overload courtesy of my brother, whose stereo blaring bands like Pantera, Sepultra, and Iron Maiden competed with mine blaring The Who, Led Zeppelin....and Rainbow. It was a Dio Duel - my Rainbow and his Black Sabbath albums; it's a wonder my mother didn't go insane.
It wasn't until some years later, he and I were driving somewhere while I was visiting home, that we realized Ronnie James Dio was in both bands when a song came on the radio and we argued whether it was Rainbow or Black Sabbath. His friend had to step in and correct us both, (it's a wonder he didn't go insane) - it was just "Dio"; a song from his solo efforts.

It still gives me a little smile to pop in here and see "ilb" in the author column of a thread right at the top of posting. I don't think I want to ever go back and read from the beginning, but I think it will make me sad the day when it's time for you to lock this thread, FBM, and start a "Music II" thread.
Seems like a lifetime that she started this thread instead of just five years ago...

How about YOU start the second music thread when this one hits 1500 posts, and I'll move this thread to archives when I lock it and sticky it to the top so it will be easy to find. Maybe even make it an announcement for a day or two. (Remind me.)

It always begins with a great risk, a risk we all take with trepidation, or possibly joy. It begins with love. Without love there would be no loss; without caring there would be no heartbreak. We love and therefore we will —unfortunately — know what it is to grieve. We love. That may or may not lessen the pain of our loss. That may or may not make loss bearable. But I promise you that only in loving can we participate in life. Only in loving. You are blessed to have lived and loved with intensity, and the things and people and places that remind you of this are dear friends all. Anon

I'm glad you liked it. Are Mary's kids still having problems? Do you get to visit with them? ~ I wish I could get this to Phalon about now. The context isn't right, but what it says is what I'd like to say to her. A few of my favorite lines in italics. Not being eloquent myself, it's often better to find a song ~ music so often says what I cannot.
An Old Fashioned Love Song ~ Thee Dog Night
Just an Old Fashioned Love Song Playing on the radio And wrapped around the music Is the sound of someone promising they'll never go You'll swear you've heard it before As it slowly rambles on and on. No need in bringing em back Cause they've never really gone Just an Old Fashioned Love Song Coming down in three part harmony Just an old fashioned love song One I'm sure they wrote for you and me To weave our dreams upon and Listen to each evening when the light are low To underscore our love affair With tenderness and feeling That we've come to know You'll swear you've heard it before As it slowly rambles on and on No need in bringing em back Cause they've never really gone Just an Old Fashioned Love Song Coming down in three part harmony Just an Old Fashioned Love Song One I'm sure they wrote for you and me.

Can anybody join the weirdness?
Hominy refers to corn that has been disinfected. Well, actually it's "without the germ" but anything without germs has been disinfected. Right? Anyway it is served both whole or ground, or wholly ground. Hominy is then boiled until cooked. Unfortunately, "cooked" is a confusing term to most people when it comes to hominy since no one really knows if it is cooked or they are eating some new and strange local variety. If you can chew it without cracking a tooth on a large grain or getting a boulder stuck between your teeth, that’s an indication it was “cooked”. It is served as either a cereal or as a vegetable - again adding to the confusion about the term cooked. Hominy may also be pressed into patties and fried. I suspect you can over fry it back into something resembling its’ original crunchiness, which adds more confusion to determining when this stuff is “cooked”. This dish is especially popular in the southern United States, which explains a lot about people from the south. Hominy ground into small grains is sometimes called "hominy grits" - and is graded on the same scale as regular sandpaper since it's just about as tasty. To answer your question, three part hominy is grits with ham and gravy. Wait. You said harmony. Oh. Three part harmony is a barbershop quartet minus the bass singer because he has a sore throat from eating fried hominy.

Very cool, Stepper. Cool that Jewel would do that....and also cool that an entire bar full of people would encourage and cheer on a "nobody" the way they did.
Here's one that got us all cheering here. When I first saw it, I thought OMG, Hubs is on YouTube!!! It's as if someone took his life and set it to music.
What's so cool about this is the way LX and he interacted when viewing it. They've been butting heads lately...just like Mom and I used to butt heads when I was a teenager. Dad always said it's because we were both alike - both stubborn to the core. LX and Hubs are the same, neither giving an inch, and disagreeing about everything - even simple things, including her choice of music, which he can't stand. The video is rap - which is her current obsession. It was fun watching her try to teach him how to rap and dance along with the video; they actually shared some father/daughter time without disagreeing. Which meant for me....ahhhh, a bit of peace in the house for a while.

Dolly Pardon was on Oprah, and she told how one Halloween she entered a contest and lost. No one thought she looked like Dolly Pardon. hmm Maybe it was a Dolly Pardon look alike contest ... anyhoo, she lost. That is funny.

Wow - cool Jewel video. I loved seeing the reactions of the folks who were blown away by "Karen's" singing. It was also very sweet to see how people were moved by seeing Jewel in person, and hearing a song they grew up with.
*sigh* Man, the power of music never ceases to amaze me.

I heard an interview with the lead singer of Cracker, talking about their youtube for the song "Yalla Yalla". It's fun seeing our military folks get to let their hair down a bit. They deserve it.

Katy Perry's "California Girlz" went to #1 in only four weeks, Capitol Records' fastest chart-topper in 30 years. And the video is just as popular - 35,000,000 views and counting. I can see why. It's funny and sexy, and features 2 charismatic stars, Katy and Snoop Dog. But it's the look of the video that made me a repeat viewer. The director created a gorgeous candyland, full of wonders. There's so much going on, I notice something new every time I watch it. When you watch, keep in mind that Katy was acting in front of a greenscreen, and that much of the set was created on computer. And she is nearly naked in some shots, so be warned.

I'd never seen the video prior to you posting the link, Siren - but I've certainly heard the song 80 gillion times. LX and BP both sing the 'daisy dukes, bikinis on top' stanza at least once a day....I'm sure just to get it engrained in my head, in their (futile) attempt to drive me mad. HA! Little do they know I can stand it a whole lot easier than LX's rap music. Actually, it is quite catchy.
