This song was not a hit for DLM, but I've always liked it. Paints quite a picture. I think what appeals to me is that the tune reminds me of a Hemingway story I loved back in college, "The Big Two-Hearted River". It's hobos doing the camp-cooking in this tune, while it's Nick, the young hero, who camp-cooks in Hemingway's story. You can read the story here: producer.csi.edu/cdraney/2010/278/resources/hemingway-two-hearted-river.pdfWhen I was really broke, out in the real world for the first time, many years ago, I used to eat a lot of "Hemingway", as I rather romantically called it - cheap canned spaghetti and pork & beans heated together - as Nick prepared it in the "River" story. from "Gettin' Out The Good Stuff" by David Lee Murphy Hobo Jim was tendin' the fire He said, "Tonight, boys, we've got a feast. Got a fresh-stole hen, and half pint of gin, And a big can of blackeyed peas. Said, "It ain't no joke that hickory smoke Can work up an appetite." He said, "Roll up your sleeves, and don't wait for me. Boys, we're gonna do it up right." "We're gettin' out the good stuff tonight. Yeah, we're windin' it up and lettin' it go. Just the good stuff tonight. Yeah, there ain't no place like home sweet home." "Got the moon and the stars and some quarter cigars. Boys, it don't get better than that. Got a big pile of wood, and it sure feels good To just kick back and relax." He's learnin' to treasure the simpler pleasures. It comes real easy for me. As a matter of fact, life by the tracks, It's kinda hard to beat. We're gettin' out the good stuff tonight Yeah we're windin' it up and lettin' it go Just the good stuff tonight Yeah, there ain't no place like home, sweet home In the scheme of things, you don't wanna save it too long 'Cause you can't take it with you when you're gone next: half

When you're out in the world for the first time and really broke, everything is supposed to be rather romantic, I think.
from "Lonely Road" by Everlast
Too much time thinking about all of my mistakes My heart, my mind, my soul, my body aches A hunger for, the loving arms of your embrace I walk along the lonely road
next word: mistake(s)
There is something about this song....Everlast (a.k.a Erik Francis Schrody) is a cross-over rapper and hip-hop artist; I only know the stuff he's done that's classified as alternative rock. This song though, fits none of that. The voice reminds me of one of those singers of by-gone years; for whatever reason I always envision Louie Armstrong singing "It's a Wonderful World" when I hear this:

Yes, I agree, Gams. Too bad we can't always paint the tough times in a romantic hue. Oh man - that is a great song, Gams! I have never heard him before. Thanks! from "Best Mistake I Ever Made" by Kevin Fowler That was the BEST MISTAKE I ever made The Lord works in mysterious ways Chose a wrong path all my life But for once I did something right And just one look in her eyes and I see Someone smiling down on me And I'm not too proud to say That was the best mistake I ever made next: best

Honey (I Miss You) # Bobby Golsboro
See the tree, how big it's grown But friend it hasn't been too long It wasn't big I laughed at her and she got mad The first day that she planted it, was just a twig Then the first snow came And she ran out to brush the snow away So it wouldn't die Came runnin' in all excited Slipped and almost hurt herself And I laughed till I cried She was always young at heart Kinda dumb and kinda smart and I loved her so And I surprised her with a puppy Kept me up all Christmas Eve two years ago And it would sure embarrass her When I came in from workin' late 'Cause I would know That she'd been sittin' there and cryin' Over some sad and silly late, late show
And honey, I miss you And I'm bein' good And I'd love to be with you If only I could

Ride, Captain, Ride ~ The Blues Image
Seventy-three men sailed up from the San Francisco Bay. Rowed off of their ship, and here's what they had to say. "We're callin' everyone to ride along to another shore, We can laugh our lives away and be free once more."
But no one heard them callin', no one came at all, 'Cause they were too busy watchin' those ol' raindrops fall. As a storm was blowin' out on the peaceful sea, Seventy-three men sailin' off to history.
Ride, captain, ride upon your mystery ship, Be amazed at the friends you have here on your trip. Ride, captain, ride upon your mystery ship, On your way to a world that others might have missed.
Next: Shore
