Congratulations Spock! I hope you get as much out of it as you have put into it. Thanks, I certainly hope so. I have a feeling I'm going to have to get a real video card. I tried playing one of my older games and the video kept disappearing!? I could still her the sound but the screen was black. When the graphics were visible, they were phenomenal though, even using the on-board graphics of the motherboard. Oh well, what would life be without challenges?

Pleasant - at least there'd be interludes of it.

I'm running "Stress Tests" of the various systems now, supposedly to get it to run optimally. What is most annoying now is that my old system, which I want to copy some files from, won't even boot up! Once I get the new system up and running smoothly, I will pull the harddrives from the old one and bung them into the new one to strip the data before reformatting them as backup cartridges.

Welp, here I am on my new laptop, (feeling like I'm learning to type for the very first time), all set up, and everything moved over from my old computer. Just in time, it seems - after a new round of Windows updates yesterday, the old gal was acting finicky and somewhat sluggish.
'Course there are issues, because there always has to be issues. I need a new WiFi router; the old one cannot connect to my printer because the printer is older than the router, and probably older than the old computer, which was the only computer in this house that has been able to communicate with the printer because it's hardwired and not running on WiFi (that is one long, run-on sentence). Of course, I could always hardwire the laptop, just as I could have used Wifi to run the old computer, but then I wouldn't have had a working printer.
Or something like that. All I really know is the computer is old, the printer is old, and the router is not only old, it's a cheap model. Since I replaced the computer, the router seems like the most obvious thing to replace next.
And oh! The new DVD player I had to buy the other day because the old one finally bit the dust (it was so old it also is a VCR; the VCR part hasn't worked in years) runs off WiFi too.
As LX said the other day (when I was all proud of my newfound ability to download a photo from the Internet on my phone and send it via text message), I have finally joined the rest of the world.

I have a couple of spare routers which are fairly powerful but the cost of postage would probably be more than you would have to pay for a new router.
For what it's worth, I've always been partial to Linksys which is now a Division of CISCO.

Knowing I'd be dumbfounded looking at these things, that's one of the options Computer Guy suggested - a Linksys Wireless N300 Dual Band Access Point WAP300N to be exact. The other two are made by Zyxel and NetGear.
So far, so good - though I really haven't played around with it much. The speed is amazing compared with my old computer! Only thing I don't like - and it's been the same with every laptop I've ever used - is how sensitive the keyboard and touchpad are; dang, it does all kinds of stuff I don't want it to, just because I'm too heavy-handed. I'll get a wireless mouse when I get the router, and hopefully, that'll take care of some of the problem.

I've used Netgear and for some reason switched to LinkSys. I have only had one problem and they shipped out a replacement right away, so I'm now partial to CISCO products. I just did a rummage through my junque room and found the box for a Wireless-B Broadband Router Model #BEFW11S4. Unfortunately, the box is empty ... I think I gave it away to Viet Nam Vets. I would have let you have it for shipping costs but I don't seem to have it any more. How's that saying go, it's junk until you get rid of it and then you'll need it? [Added] Funnily enough, Amazon had the same thing for less than half the price! If you have a "Computer Guy" you trust, let him recommend which model to get. A newer model now may cost a little more but it will last a lot longer.

Thanks, Spock. I ended up getting the Netgear one, basically because it was the only router out of the three he recommended that they had in stock. I hope it works; out of the dizzying array of routers they had (which included a lot of Linksys, just not the model I was looking for), not a single one said it was compatible with Windows 10.
I'm guessing that because my old router was made before Windows 10 came out and works, this one will too.

Almost all my routers have been ordered via the Internet but I usually know pretty much exactly what I want and am just shopping for the best price. Sometimes I will do research to find out what the latest and greatest is and still end up getting something less ... because it costs less. Internet Protocol is standard. Every router and every Operating System has to abide by the standards.

Thanks, Scrappletta! Maybe you'd want to help by walking me through how to do it? Like when you tried to walk me through how to use Media Player. LMAO! Thought I was gonna die laughing with that one. Still makes me chuckle thinking about what I put you through.
That's exactly what I was thinking...only it went something like "Windows wouldn't be so ****ing stupid as to come out with something unusable". But then I remembered Vista. And Windows 8.

Ok, this is stupid, but it's driving me nuts. Yesterday while I was logged in, the font here suddenly changed to a different style and smaller print, which I'm sure was because I had the touchy-ass cursor hovering over something that I didn't intend to have it hovering over. I can't figure out how to change it back.
Checked my profile options, and there's nothing in there. It's not when I type a post - the font is still the same there. It's when I'm viewing the board both before and after I'm logged in. It's not other websites, just this one.
Any suggestions?

You may have accidentally changed the page display size (percentage). In the bottom right of the browser window, if you see "95%" or anything less than that, change it back to 100%. Essentially you zoomed out and need to zoom back in again.
You can also hold the ALT key and roll the Scroll Button (the round thing between the left and right click buttons) forward a click or two to see if that helps or fixes the problem. But I believe your assessment is correct - you accidentally changed one setting or another.

Press and hold the ctrl key, then click on the number 0 key. Or press and hold the ctrl key and then click on either the + or - key.

How'd you know I figured it out? Or were you talking to Joxie?
Thanks you two, for your suggestions. The first thing Stepper suggested worked (though it took me a few to figure out where to look, because it wasn't where he suggested it'd be, and I wasn't sure what he was suggesting!)

Really? I find that surprising. If the scroll wasn't on the mouse, where was it?
Joxcee's method was probably easier for you - I'd forgotten that would work.
How did I know? Because you're smarter than you let on. And, there's very little difference between psychic and psychotic.

No, I didn't need to go as far as trying the scrolling mouse (don't have a mouse yet anyway; still using the touchpad), which is a good thing because there is no rollie thing on the touchpad, and then I really wouldn't have known where to look.
This is what I did...
...and it worked, except WTF is a browser window, and there's nothing at the bottom right of my screen except the sound control, Wifi connection and some other whatnots, so I went to the top right and clicked on the "open menu" 3-little-line icon, saw a figure that was 90% which was not at the bottom right of the menu, but was top and center, but I changed it anyway to 100% without really knowing what I was changing because it said nothing about page display size. And I still have no idea what that had anything to do with the style of font, that went from what I think is Arial to Times New Roman, which is what I prefer, and had always had here.
Wanna do a take back?

You're so cute when you're being funny!
Okay - Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Google Chrome, and the rest, are called browsers - they let you browse the internet. When you start them, they open up a squareish viewing area that is called a window. Put it together and you have a browser window. Different versions of browsers display things differently and/or in different locations. In my browser, the percentage display is in the bottom right of the browser window. That you found it elsewhere on your own proves my point so... ... nope.
So you're using Google Chrome then?
Unless you saw something that specifically indicated a change in font styles, then it probably didn't change. What you most likely saw was the system obeying other commands. (Some web sites prevent changing only the font size so the Ctrl + or - won't always work the way you expect.) Excluding those sites, your system has commands that tell it how to display text and those commands include adjustments intended to keep the text readable. Otherwise you could stretch or crunch the text so badly that it'd become completely unreadable - and that could be a really bad thing if it happened in the wrong spot or if your system saved that display as the setting for next time. Anyway, the process of adjusting the text so you can read it may have changed the appearance enough that you thought the style had also changed. Or the system really did change the font and I just wasted a minute of your time.

Yes, I knew that.
Well, that makes sense...but I never put it together on my own. And I wasn't in the browser window when I changed whatever it was I changed, or fixed whatever it was I fixed.
I hovered the cursor over every possible thing displayed on the screen that I didn't know what it did specifically until I found something that had a percentage, and then once I found it, I changed it without really knowing what I was changing.
No, I use Firefox. The 3-line thing is in my tool bar, and is the icon I go to when I delete my history, cookies, and stuff. It has other things in there too, that I've never used because I don't know what they do.
Now that you mentioned it, and I really look at it the font, you're right - it is the same.
Are you sure? There's still time.
Joxie, that you posted Youtube videos is a coincidence. Was having coffee Saturday with a friend, and we were talking about how you can find a video on Youtube for just about anything; she used one recently that was a tutorial about how to repair a patio table umbrella.

Yet, you fixed the setting. What you did was find another place to access the setting, and modified it. There's almost always multiple ways to accomplish the same thing - especially things like this. On my cell phone, you enlarge pictures by putting your fingers together over the area you want to enlarge and spread them apart. The picture can be significantly modified, but only in the viewer - the original picture is not affected by this. Ditto Chrome which is why I thought that was the browser you were using. I don't have Firefox - no experience with it at all. In spite of the fact that I'm a guy, I can't be wrong all the time. There's a lot out there that you wouldn't want to see too, but a friend recently saved a bundle by finding a video on how to replace the external door handle mechanism on his Toyota. Mini Mia Did you notice that for all the rest, the instructions were a couple minutes, but the one for Windows 8 was 9:11? That number is appropriate on more than one level because Windows 8, IMNSHO, was so uselessly complicated and unusable that only in the world's most cr@ppy operating system would it take that long to explain "make bigger".

stepper: I did notice that. Sadly, I haven't found the time to upgrade to 10. Hope to find the time soonish.

That always comes in exceedingly handy at the nursery when people ask for plant disease or insect damage diagnosis based on photos taken on their phone or tablet. I've even used pinch-zoom here at Whoosh more than a few times. Whenever my old computer crashed, I'd use BP's Mini Ipad as a computer replacement until mine was fixed - but my fingers were too big to hit the tiny page numbers on the small screen to get to a thread or make post without using the pinch-zoom feature. As handy as the feature is though, it's one of the reasons I did not want a touchscreen laptop - the touchpad is sensitive; a touchscreen is even more so, at least for me. Using the touchscreen computer at work, there have been many times I've zoomed without meaning to zoom - a minor irritation, but why deal with it when you don't have to?
Oh, and I figured out how the font suddenly changed size without me meaning to do it...because it just happened again. The scroll bar on the side lines up perfectly with the three-line icon, and instead of scrolling, I pulled down the icon menu. At least this time, I knew how to fix it!

OO! OO! OO! The level of sensitivity, the speed at which the mouse moves around, all that kind of stuff is settings that you can adjust.
See? You'll be the PC expert in no time.

Mini Mia It involves more than a hose and a fireman's nozzle? Oops. Don't wait too long Joxcee. The free upgrade is only good for just so long. You'll have to do it in steps too. You can't go straight from 8 to 10 - you have to do the intervening releases too. The Microsoft upgrade system will pretty much drive that bus for you but it can take quite a bit of time - best to pick a day/evening and commit to it I think.

Good to know. I have 8.2 now, I think.
We got Mom in the shower Monday night. Her skin is super sensitive, and she 'yelp' when the wash cloth brushed across her skin. I gotta hit the hay early tonight. Gotta sit with Mom while my sister does her physical therapy in the morning.
