Ok stupid question.....
I recently posted on the word association thread and my word was changed to reflect what I'm assuming is a PG version. I picked Pea_ _ _ _. Meaning one of those birds with the long bluey, greeny, purply, tail feathers, and ended up with Peathingy. Now I thought this was way too hilarious. Still LMAO
So now I'm wondering......does this happen automatically?.....or does someone have to do it? It has to be automatic.......

Yep, it's automatic, and I'm gonna take that word out of the filter right now. We don't want peacóck or cóckadoodledoo coming out peathingy or thingyadoodledoo. I had one incident myself where I tried to post Whooshites, and it came out Whoo nutses. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I aim to please. I suppose some people might put crap in their word filter, but where I come from, it's not a dirty word. Well, ok, it is dirty, but it's not profane.

We should come up with more interesting replacements... such as what's used on our favorite shows:
On Farscape...
F**k = Frell F**king = Frelling
The Crocodile Hunter...
S**t = Crikey!
On Roar, the one guy is always saying: "Sweet Bridget!"
Then there's Xena...
Son of a Bacchae! By the gods! etc.
Anyone got others to add?

Time to bring this thing back to the top again...So sorry.
I've never figured out to do the quote thingy correctly. If I hit the quote button on someone's post, it puts the entire post in a quote, even if I highlight the part I want to quote first.
I suppose I could delete the remainder of the post - the part I don't want to quote. It just seems there would be an easier way.
I usually just end up copying and pasting, then manually typing in the brackets around the word quote, but doing it this way, I don't get the header of whom I'm quoting and when they wrote it.
Please advise.

That's about the only way you can do it, if you want it to appear like this: Time to bring this thing back to the top again...So sorry. I kinda like to do something like this, though: Phalon said:This is the code for that: [b]Phalon said: [/b][color=ffffcc][quote]Time to bring this thing back to the top again...So sorry. [/quote][/color]If you highlight after where it says Phalon said:, you'll see that the word "Quote" is still there. But the [color=ffffcc] [/color] surrounding the [quote] [/quote] tags hides the word "Quote", by making it the same color as the background. An easier alternative would be to do this: Phalon said Phalon said [quote]Time to bring this thing back to the top again...So sorry. [/quote] But like Jox said, if you want the "Phalon wrote" to be a link to the post, the easiest way is to click on the "Quote" icon in their post, then highlight and delete everything you don't want to quote.

Joxie....I don't know if you can help with my computer problems, but I figure I'd give it a shot....
So here's what happened. My neighbor gave me a Lexar Media JumpDrive key which he loaded pictures of the kids his wife took on her digital camera. I plugged it into the port to download the pictures, and got a warning that said something to the effect of "Warning...High Speed Device plugged into Low Speed Port. Follow Instructions to safely remove." Which I did. Called neighbor, (who works with computers for a living and who swears this has nothing to do with anything), and he said to forget the warning and go ahead with it. I did. And now my computer is dying.
I've ran virus scans. I've done a system restore, deframented, deleted cookies, deleted temp files, and deleted about everything else I could think of. I've cleaned my mouse, shot my keyboard with the aerosol stuff to clean keyboards, and kicked everything a few times.
It's slow...slower even then when I had dial-up. When I finally get this site to load, and log in, I will sometimes get "page cannot be displayed" when entering a post. I also get booted off the site, only to come back hours later to still find myself logged in. Closing sites, or documents I sometimes get "ghost" images of what was up on my screen, but is no longer active.
So Fairy Board Mother....since you've recently had to replace yours, tell me...is there any hope? Does any of this sound familiar? Fixable, even?
ACK! I'm melting....

The warning only means that the device you plugged in is "high speed" and that the port you plugged it into is "low speed"... it's just to let you know that the device can only download at the rate of speed of the port... it can only do "high speed" in a high speed port. And it shouldn't be the cause of your computer dying, unless it contained a virus.
I got the slow speed sometimes, but I don't recall getting the ghost images. You've done everything I would have done, and I can't think of anything else to do at the moment. Oh... have you turned off your router for a few minutes and then turned it back on? Also, how old is your computer? Does it make noises when it's running? Like a squealing or grinding noise?
I bought an external harddrive when mine began making weird noises, and saved all my personal stuff to it before taking it to a local computer repair shop. Saving all your stuff to CDs or an external harddrive will keep it safe should the cpu die before you can get it looked at or fixed.
Too bad Le is disconnected, she might have an idea of what to do.

I've heard that spyware can slow computers down.... there are two programs that are suppose to clean your computer of them: Ad-aware and Spybot -- Search & Destroy. I don't use them, but you can check them out.

Dang, I thought I had the cause of the problems figured out.
Dang, again. I was kind of hoping you'd have a miracle quick-fix.
Tell me, what the heck is a router?
The computer is three years old - but I bought it used, (from neighbor, who's company just got new ones), when I switched to DSL. My old computer, a relic apparently, was not equipped to handle the DSL equipment.
A grinding noise? You mean like the little clicks and whirs that let's you know it's thinking? Hhmm...yes, I hear clicking at what may be inappropriate times. Perhaps it is having inappropriate thoughts, and that is the problem?
If it dies completely, unfortunately, it'll be awhile before I can get a new one - one of the drawbacks of having my winters off work; our budget is tighter than would allow for a new computer.
Hubs is doing that for me tonight, but thanks for the advice.
He's checked my giga-bytes or mega-bytes, or whatever bytes, (except my over-byte which I had fixed way back in jr. high by the orthodontist), and said that the allowance is over half full, which he says seems impossible for what little I use the computer for.
I suppose if the thing gives, I can always pull out my relic, switch back to dial-up, and use that until spring comes and the nursery re-opens.

My gateway computer started making weird noises about 2 years after I bought it... this went on for about a year when I bought my external harddrive to move my stuff to. I took the cpu in for repairs and some upgrades shortly after getting the external harddrive, but the cpu didn't act up for the repair guy. (typical) The noises started getting worse, but I ignored them and continued to store my stuff to the ex-hd. Then this past August, my computer would just shift over into safety mode, so I took it in to the repair shop again, and they told me the harddrive was dying and the whole unit was overheating.
I had them build me a new cpu, and they installed a fan to keep it from overheating. Overheating can cause the computer to act strangely... does yours have an internal fan? (I thought my Gateway cpu did, but apparently it didn't.) Perhaps yours is only overheating and all you need is to install a fan. I'd say you may need to take it to a computer repair shop. You can google the symptoms to see if there is information out there that might give you an idea of what is wrong.

I did a little googling and found this. And found Ghost/Burn. (I'm guessing this isn't what is happening in your case.)

Thank you, thank you again for your suggestions. There is an internal fan, I know, because the noise drives me nuts, (my old computer was very quiet).
The ghost image really isn't either of the problems on the links, Joxie. It only happens when I close out a screen, and then the image, very faint, but clear enough to still read, will remain there for about 30 seconds or so before it fades away.
New weird thing as of today...sometimes when I close a site, or shut down, the images on the screen will disappear scrolling from the top down, as if rolling down a car window but looking at it outside down. Huh? Did that make the least bit of sense?
Zena, lovely bard from the Zena Scrolls, has suggested my problems stem from participating in the Whoosher House story, instead of staying home in the ZS. Maybe she's on to something...computer possession by the Whoosher demons. Actually, the House thread takes about 5 minutes to load. Argh. I think it's all the graphics - and I'm not talking about descriptions.

I can't do anything about the Whoosher thread, as the decorating is Le's department... I'm only just learning HTML, so I don't know how to undo her design. I hope she gets reconnected soon. I can't think of what else could be the problem.

No Joxie, I didn't mean that I wanted you to undo the graphics on the Whoosher thread. I know the others like it. It's just one of the slowest things to load for me.
I do feel better after this conversation. Something you said, (when you asked me how old my computer was), actually triggered the idea about just switching back to my old computer and dial-up if this one gives. I was kinda bumming about the possiblity of not having a computer all winter, so with this back up plan in place, tis not so bad.
Thanks again for all your help, Fairy Board Mother!

You're very welcome...
OH! A router is the DSL box that you plug into your computer and the phone jack... I always turn mine off before shutting down the computer... and then turn it back on after starting up. I don't see the point in leaving it on 24/7. Especially if I'm working on stuff that doesn't require the internet.

I also turn my router off whenever I go watch TV, eat, cook, etc.... I only turn it on when I want to be on the internet. As I said, I don't see the point of being constantly connected.

I'll be sure to put in a few good words to Gig for you when she gets back. Maybe you'll get a new wand and a few extra sprinkles of fairy dust each week for all your efforts here with me. Even Fairy Board Mothers need a pat on the back every now and then.
I'll just keep my fingers crossed that I won't have to deal with dial-up again.
