I didn't want to clutter up this forum with a bunch of "How do I", "How come" and "Why is this" questions. But, of course, I have a million of them.
Like...
How come I can't check that box that says "Disable Smilies" and actually have the smilies disabled? I feel like I'm at Walmart.
Why am I not allowed to edit a post. Oh man, I'll be in big trouble if I can't do that. I'm hitting the modify button and it says something like, "Error occured. Function not allowed." Is modify not the same thing as edit, and if not, is there an edit button somewhere?
Ok, nevermind that last part. It seems to be working now.
Oh! And the delete option is here!!! I miss that from O2. Yay!

It seems you figured out all but one:
I'm guessing you mean this box?
If so, I see what you mean. I just checked the box and typed the code for a smiley, and the smiley showed up anyway. I'll have to look into why that is.

Thanks for looking into the smiley thing, Gig. A small thing, I know, but I like my screen simple, uncluttered and prefer to type without a bunch of leering faces staring at me.
Have questions about the PMs also, but I'll get into that later.
Thanks in advance for your patience. BOLL

Jox You're welcome, Phalon! Our PM box is a bit different from the old setup, so I was thinking about doing one of my famous tutorial threads on it.

Gig! I left you a message over at the other board, but since you're here....
I had already created my icon the way I told you before you said "No". It works fine. Is there a reason that I should not have done it this way? All it did was put a neat little "Whoosh Home" icon on my desktop that brings me directly here, instead of having to go to a home page then clicking on favorites. Much faster. Ack! Did I screw something up?

You didn't screw up at all! I wasn't thinking about the fact that sending it to the desktop would actually create a link to the board, because I never do that myself. Your way definitely sounds better and less-confusing than my way. Good job!

Gig!!!! I'm here. Ignore all other frantic messages. I had to reset the security level of my cookies, (or some such thing). And hey, I figured it out all by myself! Maybe there is a glimmer of hope afterall.

I was just reading your email, and thought it sounded like it had to do with cookies. I'm glad you got it worked out!

Is there a way to increase the number of characters allowed in a post? I remember doing that at the old O2 board. Ezboard didn't seem to have a limit.
Just wondering, because in moving over parts of the Scrolls, I noticed that some of the posts had to be split because they exceeded the 10,000 character limit.
Gig, have you had a chance to look into this disable smilies thing yet?

I haven't seen a code yet that can lengthen the allowed post length, but I found and installed a code in the Scrolls (just now) that will tell you how many characters you have left. You'll see it just below the posting box in the Scrolls board. Hopefully this will help some, until (if) I can find something to let you make longer posts. I haven't found anything to simply disable smilies, except to insert a code box into your post.
Notice how I can use custom smilies, but when I type in the code for a default smiley, it just stays text. Type in [*color=ffffcc][*code][*/code][*/color] (without the *'s), and you get this:
I wonder what would happen if you put that in for your sig?

Phalon, Forget about the whole [ code ] thing, because somebody at the help boards just gave me the solution to your dilemma! :) When you check the [ ] Check this if you'll be...... box, it's supposed to put #nosmileys into the underlying (source) code of the page. So.... When you make a post, just type #nosmileys anywhere in your post, and bye bye default smileys. :) The custom smilies will still work, of course, but there's no way you could insert those by accident. Oh, and don't worry, #nosmileys won't show up in your post. I divided that up with color tags to make it display in this post. :) BTW, one of ProBoards staff (Ryan) assures me that they're working on a fix for this and the TEXT bug for their version 4 release, although I'm not sure when that's scheduled.

Thanks for your help, Gig, on both matters. Having a character count should be helpful...I'll have to try it out tonight and move some more of the scrolls over.
I think we may be talking about two different things with the smileys. Nothing against smileys, mind you, I just would rather not see it next to where I'm typing. Somehow it was able to be hidden at the other board. I know ezboard and proboard are different, but just wondering if there is an option I can use somewhere that will enable me to hide the box of smileys.
Thanks again.

You're welcome. Sorry about the smilies mixup, I didn't realize you were talking about the box on the left. There's no setting for that, but it might be possible to find a code for it, or ask someone to create a code. I'm thinking a little DHTML might be in order, and I wonder if they could do it according to particular users' preferences without actual root access to ProBoards. Sorry, just thinking out loud. Come to think about it, I might be able to add a line to the existing code to make it disappear for only people I add to the code. Gimme about 20 minutes and I'll see what I can do.

It took more than one line of code and twice as long, but I think I did it! Let me know if it works for you in this board, and I'll add it to the others.

Ack! The little black bars tonight are not showing the icon thingies on my computer. No words either. I can only faintly see that there is something there. I found the reply button only because I guessed that it was the first thing on the bar. I've no clue where the log-out thing is though. I know it's somewhere up at the top, and suppose I'll find it by trial and error.

I see you found the logout button, because you left within a couple of minutes after making this post. Now as for this weirdness... Have you had this problem the whole time you were on tonight? Or did it start somewhere in the middle? Could the new code I wrote for you possibly be causing it? If you've had the problem all night, did you happen to notice if all the icons were in the one board with the new code before I added it to all the boards? What is this faint something you were seeing? A rectangle? A faint image? I've actually been experiencing different weirdness tonight. For some reason, some of the smilies are moving, and others that are supposed to be, aren't. But that's only on Netscape, and when I switch over to Explorer, everything is normal for me.

I'm pretty sure it was nothing you were working on. I'm back on the old computer until the DSL line comes, (hubs says it was necessary, cuz the new computer didn't have a modem for dial-up service. Not really sure he knows what he is talking about. Not necessarily the blind leading the blind, but close to the visually impaired leading the blind).
Anyway, sometimes the color scheme on the graphics go haywire, (I didn't notice this with the new computer). Like when at the old Whoosh chat, my screen would go pea-green or blood red, (maybe possessed?). The big old chakram up top turns a nice shade of neon green, fushia and black as well as the smilies, (they become striped and the chakram dotted - like kinda fuzzy). Here, because the bar is black, when that happened last night, I couldn't make out but the faintest sign that something was actually in the bar. (God only knows what I clicked on before finding the log-out option).
All is okay now, (it comes and goes), but I am making a mental note as to where things are. Pfft - like I'll remember.

It's quite possible that the new computer didn't have a modem for dialup. Did he check to see if the old computer's modem would fit into the new computer? I was just thinking about all the troubles you had at ezWhoosh with the colors, etc. I wonder if your graphics card or something is going out on you. If I remember correctly, doesn't it seem to act up more when there is a lot of animation? Or maybe that was a lot of animated script... Maybe it doesn't have enough RAM to handle too many things going on at once. Dang, I wish I knew more about that end of things.

Can you do that? Fit the modem into the computer? Without directions? Not that he ever uses them, but seems kinda risky.
Weird, the color thing. I can lurk all I want and have perfect color. Even log in, and it is fine. It is only after I post, (sometimes), the the color goes wacky. Or, if in chat, only if someone left, (and not all the time), that the color would change.
Anway, whatever...I know where the log-out button is now, and it's time for me to use it. Work in the am, though, whoo-hoo, holiday hours and I don't have to be in until 10am.

Just check the part of the modem that plugs into the computer. If it looks like it'll fit into a slot, then plug it in, hook it up, and see if it works. When the modem went out on my old computer, I bought an old used modem that was bigger, but the part that fit into the slot was the same size, and it worked. When your color goes all wacky, have you tried deleting all your temporary files? (Tools » Internet Options » Delete Files) This is also referred to as clearing the cache.

I have to buy a new computer and have some dumb questions. 1. When I hook up the new computer, and use the same server, will all my information still be there? Such as, I use phone connection thru AOL. Same E-mail name? Thanks, Julie

Hi Msjulier. Congrats on getting a new computer! Yes, your email address will still be the same, as will all of your other online accounts (such as the ProBoard account you're posting with right now), because all that information is stored on those companies' servers (computers), and have nothing to do with your computer. However, since any emails you may have saved in your filing cabinet are stored on your computer, you'll have to copy those over if you want to access them from the new computer. If this is the case, you may want to have a friend help you with that.
