No ribs. We usually wing it.
Turkey wings. We have roast turkey.
Why? Just curious.

I was just curious. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas with family, friends, and work dinners, someone suggested going outside the box a few years back because they were tired of the turkey and ham. (Of course that was before we became veggites.)
Anyway, I got voted to make my barbequed ribs. They were so good. I'd marinate overnight, steam them, and cook 'em long and slow and fuss over them. Even work wanted me to make ribs for our potluck (for which I took up a collection).
It was just something different because I usually made all the rib sides at home...slaw and macaroni salad, baked sweet potatoes or fried potatoes, collard and turnip greens...you get the picture.
The first year Mare had prime rib and I had a T-bone with grilled mushrooms and onions, baked potato, salad, and garlic bread. It was just the two of us for dinner that year.
Last year, it was a tofurkey.

OU played crappy. Still beat Baylor.
One more word, please - Yay! The Gals are now the only undefeated team in the Big 12. Undefeated in conference, that is. They've lost twice this season - to #1 UConn, and to then-#2 North Carolina. Next Monday, they play defending champ, Tennessee. But the Lady Vols graduated their starting five. So, our Sooners have a good chance against this year's young team.

Impressive Sooners on the court, Siren!!
And wow! Whitney Hand in the house! Barring injury, that little freshman has a promising college career ahead. I don't think I've ever seen Coach Summit so upset...and Bob Knight so..."serene".

Sorry I didn't post this last night, gang, but I was too tired. We had a blast at the ballgame. I wish you all could've been there with me. It was magical - 12,000 people turned out to watch top-notch basketball from two classy teams. Such drama: one legendary coach going for her 1,000th win (something no other coach - man or woman, living or dead - has ever done before) - the other coach going for a team milestone: the first-ever victory over Tennessee, one of the nation's finest programs. And to add to the drama, OU's 3-time All American, Courtney Paris, saw her unprecedented string of double-double performances (reaching double figures in points and rebounds) end. It's an NCAA record, and will probably never be broken. But it is even more a testament to Courtney's heart and work ethic. Since her record-breaking freshman year, every opponent has made Courtney their main target. And still, she prevailed. Until last night. As the crowd saw time ticking down, and CP's chance to reach at least 10 points dwindling, they began chanting her name, everyone on their feet. It was AMAZING, being part of that. All those people, of every age and color, all urging that young woman on. And then she fouled out. The crowd was stunned. I mean, this string of double-doubles started in 1995. She has never missed one since then. So the reality of it was hard to believe. But then, the crowd began to cheer, and CP began to cry. She later said she was overwhelmed by the crowd's reaction. And if you can believe it, she said she felt badly for the fans, like she had let them down. She honestly doesn't get that the fans wanted the streak to continue for her behalf, and not their own. But then, people also don't consider the pressure and scrutiny that she's been under. I think the tears were as much relief as anything. It was such a powerful thing to see. And like me, many people were wiping their eyes. I'm teary right now, just thinking of it. Anyway, here's a recap. Be sure and read Courtney and her twin sister Ashley's comments. soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/020209aad.htmlWhat's next? This Sunday, the Sooners play their in-state rival, Oklahoma State, in Stillwater. This was a whole lot more than 6 words. Sorry!

And the story deserves it! Shoot, (a pun?), I don't know much about basketball, but I could feel the excitement reading your recap, Siren. How great you got to be there to witness it in person!
Sticking to six words now....
Good luck this Sunday. Go Sooners!

Thank you, Gams.
If a few clicks of my ruby slippers could transport you here, I would get you up to speed on basketball very quickly. But do you know what Whooshite WAS at the game? Lola!! She and a friend came in for the game. We had an awesome time afterward. We went for ice cream (at Braum's, Oklahoma's finest), and looked around the city a little. And the next morning, before their flight, we toured the OU campus and the Sooners' home court, the Lloyd Noble Center. Then, I took them for their first meal at a Waffle House, where Lo soon discovered the joys of "scattered, smothered, and covered". Can you believe they'd never been to a Waffle House?? We had such a nice visit. I'm so glad they could come.
I have a feeling that Sunday's game will be more like a rugby match.

LOLA?!! You spent time with Lola?!
Wow, I haven't seen Lola since that porch sit, way back...how many years ago was that? I've spoken to her since then, but it's been waaay too long since we've talked on the phone, (though we've keep in touch with each other's answering machines). She's got a birthday coming up soon; I've got to remember to call. I said the same thing to myself about that other porch sitting lovely, Eroc, and darn it, I missed her birthday by about two weeks.
What a great time you must have had showing her around....to include her first Waffle House experience. Do you believe I've never been to a Waffle House either? We don't have them here, but when we lived in Kentucky there was one not too far from us. I think the reason we never went there was the guy who bought our first house; he was super weird. I can't remember his name - my ex sister-in-law could probably tell you; I fixed her up with him on a blind date, (the blind date before I fixed her up with my brother on a blind date. HA! I turned in my Match Making License one date too late).
Weirdo was a night owl; long after we sold him the house he'd show up on our new doorstep at odd hours, and stay for hours. He was the type of person who couldn't take a hint, and more than once I practically had to shove him out the door. He invited us back to see what he'd done with the house, and my jaw dropped when we walked in the door. The entire interior was gray - gray carpeting with dark, cloudy gray walls - even the ceilings were painted gray. It looked like a cave, and he blended in quite nicely. With his pasty, white skin, and dark hair, me and and yet-to-be sis-in-law jokingly swore he was a vampire, (this was the era of Ann Rice's Vampire Chronicles, and she and I used to pass the books back and forth). He even had elongated eye teeth!
Oh, wait, his name just came to me: Rob. Weird Rod used to hang out at the Waffle House. Open 24 hours, it was his favorite nighttime spot to perch, (excluding our front porch), and he told us sometimes he'd pull an "all-nighter" in his favorite booth there.
And that's a very long explanation as to why I've never been "scattered, smothered, and covered" at a Waffle House.

Ick. With a guy like Rob hanging around, I'd be afraid I'd end up on the evening news, "scattered, smothered", and covered in a body bag. *shiver*
Thank you, katina. It really was a wonderful night. As you say, I think it'll be something I'll always remember. I was watching Coach Coale's show, and she said in reference to the crowd's reaction to CP's achievement, (paraphrasing), "How could any player watching that on tv - seeing how the fans just enveloped Courtney with support - how could any kid want to go school anywhere else but here?" I think everyone realized what a truly rare and special thing that evening was.

The gals won Bedlam, the game between OU and OSU! And Courtney's amazing achievements continue. Today, she became our conference's all-time points leader and field goals leader, and became the NCAA's all-time leading rebounder. Imagine that - more rebounds than any female player in Division 1 history! soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/020809aaa.html
